Police have increased local patrols in the area and are appealing for information about the man who is described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s, and wearing a thick dark coat with the hood up.

Detective Constable Paul Manifield, of Crownhill CID, said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the victim but she showed great bravery.

“This does appear to be an isolated incident and the motive is unclear. We are increasing patrols in the area to reassure the community and we would appeal to anyone who has information to come forward and speak to police.

“This area is very popular with dog walkers and someone must have seen this man. He would have stood out because he was wearing a heavy hooded coat which was totally unsuitable for warm sunny weather.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference EP/12/874, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“It's a pity that pepper and tear gas sprays are illegal in Britain, otherwise a woman could give a creep a faceful.
I hear you can buy them from abroad but you'd be nicked if you used one to defend yourself, it's a funny old world..”
