5,000 take part in Plymouth Race for Life
MORE than 5,000 charity-minded women have run five kilometres around the Hoe to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Warm temperatures made the task a real challenge for some, but the importance of supporting the cause saw the runners complete the task.
Thousands of supporters also flocked to the Hoe watch their loved ones participate.
Organisers believe a staggering £222,000 was raised in sponsorship.
Many runners wore pink, with some going further and dressing as angels, fairies or sporting pink wigs.
Many wore cards on their backs, some including photographs, dedicating their run to a friend or relative.
Event manager, Scott Renken, praised each and every participant in the Race for Life.
He said: “Once again it has been absolutely amazing. We have more than 5,000 women here today who are all, without exception, inspiring.
“They are each doing something incredible on behalf of something they feel very strongly about.
“It’s just inspiring to watch and be part of.”

“This was my 11th Race for Life in Plymouth and every time I do it I am overwhelmed by the amount of females who take part. A friend of mine died last year from cancer, in fact I brought her to watch last year's event and she made plans to come to this one but, alas couldn't make it.
It was a great day, yesterday., everyone enjoyed themselves and should feel very proud to have been a part of something so special. I'm looking forward to my 12th one next year.”

“Well done to all those who took part. I have only one fault and that is it could have been better organised. Staggered the runners and walkers. ie started the runners at 10am, the joggers at 10.45,the walkers and the ones with pushchairs at 11 am. Instead of everyone falling over each other.”

“At the age of 34, I didn't think I would be one of those people diagnosed with cancer. The "PHC Pink Panthers" ran in my honour along with a few colleagues of my husband from Marjon Library. I was there supporting and it brought a tear to my eye just how many people have been touched by this disease. Thank you to all that took part. Me, treatment finished, have to sit tight until September when I can next be scanned to see the outcome.”

“I was very proud of my wife yesterday, for taking part in her 3rd Race for Life, she did it with friends she works with, with one colleague a survivor, Well done to you all, very emotional day. Well done to everyone who took part, couldn't of been easy in that heat. Perhaps next year it could be held in the evening when cooler, and not 11am when the sun is at it's hottest. Just a thought”

“The sad thing is that most people haven't got a clue where their money is actually going to. The organisers claim a "staggering" £220k was raised in sponsoring. Do these 5000 good souls and their sponsors actually realise that Cancer Research UK has an annual budget of £470 million, and that their £220k raised wouldn't even be sufficient to pay 1 of their directors? There are far more deserving charities then this.”
