BUS PASSENGERS in the city will receive a financial boost when they are able to travel all day for just 50p.

The special promotion, run by First Devon and Cornwall, Plymouth Citybus and Target Travel in partnership with the city council, will operate on Saturday, March 28 and Saturday, April 4.

The 50p Bus Day aims to encourage people who don't normally use the bus to give it a try, promoting sustainable travel.

All passengers will get a ticket allowing them to travel with the same bus company anywhere in the city for the rest of the day, including on park and ride services.

Councillor Kevin Wigens, cabinet member for transport, said: "Many of us think it's easier to get around the city by car, but when you factor in the time it takes to load up your car, look for a parking space and pay for a ticket, it's often quicker and cheaper to jump on and off the bus.

"There is a good network of bus services across the city, with recent investment in new, modern vehicles and various discounts available for regular travellers. Research shows there is high ratio of car users following the same routes as buses in Plymouth, increasing congestion and impacting on the environment.

"By supporting this initiative we want to show people how clean, comfortable and convenient the city's bus services are in the hope that they will consider leaving the car at home and travelling by bus more often."

For more information, visit www.plymgo.com, call 668000 or pick up a leaflet from local libraries or the Citybus shop on Exeter Street.

The offer applies to all Plymouth services operated by Plymouth Citybus, First Devon and Cornwall and Target Travel.

“the fact is car drivers are lazy and wont walk to the bus stop, thats the bottom line thats why you lot are so anti buses, get out and join us on public transport, change your outlook, or is it you just cant be bothered.and as for making you pay for the dog good idea, you were late thats why you got the bus, you pay for the privilege of using it, but then if you got yourself sorted earlier you could have walked, but no get the bus then moan they charged you it happens deal with it.”

“The trouble is we have little option but to use the busses these days as there is nowhere cheap to park in Plymouth these days so for those who work in the City Centre we have to put up with the busses as its too expensive to park all day long!

As for Bretonside - I don't come from Plymouth although I have been living here for over 3 years now... The first time I visited Plymouth, I came down on the National Express and was shocked at what I saw the moment I got off the coach... There were three people laid in sleeping bags and the whole place stank of urine... Luckily for me my boyfriend came to pick me up and took me straight down to the Barbican which was a much better sight but I must admit I wondered what I had let myself in for when I first arrived and didn't give me much hope for the rest of the city!”

“So does that mean i should have a refund for my puppy not crapping on the bus?

Plymouth lad - I agree 1 1/2 miles is not far so why charge so much? I didn't catch the bus because of the distance but because i was running late, I don't see a problem with that do you?
Help the aged - If i ever catch a bus again she WILL be sitting on the seat and i hope your the next to sit on it after her!!
What would you rather sit next to some person with a screaming kid who doesn't have to pay or a puppy sleeping on someones lap?
Suzannah the bus company was western national”

“Jolly decent chap, you speak the minds of many. I walked through Bretonside a couple of weeks ago and walked up the staircase opposite Primark to find a drunken, homeless man urinating against the wall! Bretonside should be demolished and replaced with something of a far superior quality WITHOUT homeless people.”

“Craig the tramp (back of staples) It was with you in mind that this 50p all day thing was conceived. Anything, but anything to rid Bretonside of of the lager/beer/wine/cheap sherry drinking layabouts for just a few hours so that truly decent, law abiding, highly intelligent, awfully clean and nice people like me can walk through this disgusting hole without the distraction of the wastes of humanity all about.”

“Sounds like a good idea this 50p fare, especuially considering the 3 bus companies are all participating!!
Worth pointing out all that all bus companies that ive worked for charge for the carriage of dogs. Its to cover the cost of the clean ups etc, dogs have been known to have accidents on buses!!!”

“If buses stopped in Sainsbury( Marsh Mills ) car park, gave me a hand to load 6 heavy bags of shopping then drop me right at my front door and help me unload them, then I may think of using public transport.

Untill then I'm afraid it'sthe car for me!!!”
