The free licence will cover all the equipment in the property, meaning family or carers living in the same home could also benefit.

Anyone aged 74 or over can begin planning for the concession immediately by applying for a short-term licence which will last between one and 11 months.

Janet Morrison, chief executive of Independent Age, said: "We know from experience just how much many older people value their TVs. For many, television is a great source of information and fun, but for those who find it difficult to get out and about due to ill health or mobility problems, it can also be a much-needed source of company.

"Many older people live on very limited incomes, so the free television licence that is available to people aged 75 and over is a really valued concession. We urge all people over 75 to remember to apply for their free TV licence."

“If there is one person living in a house that has to pay council tax then council tax becomes due. The same system should apply to TV Licences until they are replaced.”

“FYI Tim, I believe it is in the terms of the free license that no-one under 75 is allowed to watch the free broadcasts. If they are in the room with you they have to face the other way or hold up a book or newspaper.”

“The silliest part of it all is that if you have ONE person living in a house over 75 the whole house gets free TV.”

“b_mused you could easily have a pay view system to replace the license fee for those who want to watch the BBC. If you had sky/virgin it would be added to your subscription, if you had freeview you would just pay the BBC directly through the same sort of encryption card scheme. It would be fair because people who just want to watch ITV wouldn't have to pay for the BBC.
cashlift, why does being Over 75 mean you need "all the help you can get". Some may need help, plenty don't. Many people over 75 have plenty of money and can look after themselves and don't need this free handout. Some may have worked hard all their lives, some may not have. You could be a career criminal and over 75 and you suddenly get all these freebies. You could work for 30 years and lose your job at 50 and you don't get a free tv license. You could work for 10 years in your whole life and reach 75 and you get a free tv license. There's no moral reason why being over 75 should qualify you for anything automatically. It's just an age.
codebreaker, no, I live within my means thank you and don't take handouts from my relatives”

“@timplymouth - Without a TV licence there would be no BBC - I don't want adverts every few minutes and I prefer the quality that BBC generally offers. For what you get, £144 over a year is very good value but I don't begrudge those of 75 + getting it for free.”

“TIMPLYMOUTH, I always thought you were a idiot , but now I am sure you are , the over 75s deserve all the help they can get , many have worked and payed there dues for years so its about time the system gave them something back .
A lot of younger people have never worked yet expect a pay check every week , so give the old timers a break , bye the way do you have parents or are you just winding people up ?”

“@timplymouth - Bet your parents love you. We would be quite a bit better off if we didn't have to keep bailing out our kids and grand kids for living beyond their means. You're probably in that category.”

“@timplymouth. I left school at 15 and have never been out of work, including National Service. Cut us oldies some slack mate, we've paid enough over the years for everything. Most of us will be lucky to see 75 anyway. These "Giveaways" are well calculated so that only the minority benefit. Why not make it free from 65 to 75 and if you live longer than that, start paying again? Bet they wouldn't do that.”
