“I much prefer driving any distance overnight because most of the people who shouldn't be allowed access to car keys in the first place are tucked up in bed or out clubbing then.”

“There are very few dangerous roads but unfortunately a host of dangerous drivers. If this was just before a roundabout the driver should have been slowing down. Clearly he/she was not and so once again it is driver error.”

    “@whinger7643

You are correct and that is rather like education today. I have to say the standard of driving of some of the people who work for these driving schools is very poor - on mobiles, eating, speeding etc”

“If you drive according to the conditions then the A38 is a safe road. The problem these days is people want to get everywhere yesterday and driving standards are a lot worse as a result. (I am not presuming for one minute bad driving was the cause of this accident). There are a couple of places on it that could do with improving, the Plymouth side of Haldon Hill could do with some street lighting. Also the exit from the Shell garage at South Brent, traffic should not cut straight across onto the A38, there is access to the Exeter bound carriageway via the local roads. Other than that is okay.
I hope this person who was involved in the accident is okay.”

“Whilst i don't believe there is any such thing as a perfect driver and some of the young new drivers are good and careful, the overall standard leaves much to be desired. CornishPirate and Maxine711 you are spot on, i was schooled to drive by a one man business who's first words i still clearly remember, "i will teach you how to drive and then when both i and you feel you are competent and confident, i will teach you how to pass your test", it wasn't untill some years later i met him and he then told me he had an 85% first time pass rate. Sadly he has now long retired and i sometimes wonder if the standard of the test has been reduced like the standard of education examinations.”

You keep to the limit, karma often comes to those that don't”

“@CornishPirate - you are so right, all too often learner drivers seem to be taught 'how to get through their test!' this is not the aim, i too was taught how to drive, i had lessons in all weathers, daytime and evenings etc etc - i think that learner drivers nowadays should have to have a minimum amount of lessons, in which they have to cover certain basics, and they are ticked off when competent, once they have completed all requirements then they can apply for their test - with all this heavy rain, mist and fog, visibility has been dreadful at times, yet i still see so many without lights on, common sense seems to be lacking in many drivers, and not just younger ones either.

and yes i do ignore them, i won't risk a speeding ticket for anyone, it may seem boring to some to drive correctly there is some sense in it and it does save lives.”

“The big problem with the A38 is that many drivers regard it as a Motorway. 70mph+ might be OK on the M5, but you don't get tractors and L drivers on it. The access and exit slip roads here are shorter and people do not know how to use them correctly. Just now when joining the Parkway at Marsh Mills Westbound: 2 trucks tailgating each other at speed across the access. Nowhere to go so I stayed on the slip road, adjusting my speed to the major road but a car behind me, going much too fast to take any avoiding action just swerved onto the Parkway. Luckily there would have been loads of witnesses to the crash. (just wonder if that 11 plate Corsa made it home in one piece).”

“The closer they drive to me, the slower I go!

I was on the road going past the airport towards Roborough the other night. Just before the two lanes merge into one - I was overtaken by someone driving a Vectra and he must have been doing around 70mph... he shot past me and I was sitting at around 45mph! Absolutley insane...

My driving instructor didnt just teach me to pass my test, he taught me to drive. I've only been driving a few years and I've already seen some CRAZY things on the Plymouth roads. I won't even mention the motorcyclist sitting right up my ar$e at about 60mph through Roborough down swerving from side to side... what a tool!”
