A RUNNER from Tavistock has powered his way to becoming the youngest person to run 100 marathons.

Adam Holland, 23, smashed the former record held by a 28-year-old at yesterday's annual Eden Project marathon in Cornwall.

He led the race until the 22nd mile, and eventually finished second overall, with a time of 2:57:03.

Adam, who runs for Tavistock Athletics Club, said: "It feels great to be the youngest person to have run 100 marathons, although everything's still sinking in.

"The course was very hilly but there are some fantastic views and I enjoyed taking in the scenery.

"I didn't come here to race, I just wanted to finish my 100th marathon."

Nearly 1,500 people ran in the full and half marathon races, with runners from as far as the USA and New Zealand taking part.

Overall winner in the full marathon was Duncan Oakes, 45, from St Austell, with a time of 2:55:16.

Naomi Tier, 26, from Truro, was the fastest woman, with a time of 3:12:24.

Oliver Gibson, 31, from Newquay who runs with Newquay Road Runners, took first place in the half marathon in 1:16:36.

Fastest woman in the half marathon was Mhairi Saville, 33, from Mount's Bay, who runs with Mount's Bay Harriers, with 1:30:36.
