Adverts and this site
It is well known that selling advertising space provides income for online sites like this one.
However, the ones appearing on the front page are extremely annoying when trying to view the content of the news articles.
Having already been caught by this, I carefully navigated around the one currently appearing when first arriving on the home page and specifically clicked on the article I wished to read.
Three times I was directed to another web page containing an advert.

Also, as a Plymouth based publication and bearing in mind the importance of promoting tourism for the city in times of economic downturn, the last thing the locals want to see is a full page advert about Australia.

“Thanks m_dalston. I have just followed your instructions and it works! I'm still getting the Clarins advert at the bottom but no more pop-ups over the articles. Now for some frustration-free browsing...”

“I don't think the site would even know that your browser is not displaying ads.
It makes a world of difference though - it removes ads from facebook, inside youtube videos, everywhere ...”

Thanks!
But would that wipe all the adverts off the site that would lead to the paper getting no advertising revenue at all?
The paper still has wages to pay and sensible adverts should remain to be fair, we don't want to force people out of jobs at this minute and time.
The alternative if this one was forced to close down would be a community newspaper site up loaded to by members of the public (WITH A MODERATOR) which means camera phone carrying people could send images of incidents that happen in front of them, local authorities, MP's and business leaders could upload press-releases and organisers could promulgate local events etc.
Called something similar to..."Plymouth Free Press", it would also break the spell of contentious issues being subdued and allow moderated comments surrounding the real things that are important to the electorate.
Might even act as a safety net for the current journalists should the unthinkable happen to our local newspapers. With a good following, well placed adverts could pay their wages.
But for now we should support this paper as it is in the interests of the local community and accept the more reader friendly adverts to keep the revenue pouring in.”

“The ad that gets my goat is the big grey one that slides over the whole screen, at first I thought it was a simulation of a mudslide on the rail line”

“@Themercenary - I don't want to end up in some flame-war between IE and non-microsoft users - but it is generally accepted that (especially Chrome) is way ahead when it comes to browser security.”

“I find it a total infringement on my viewing
I WOULD NEVER SUPPORT OR RESPOND TO ONE OF THE PARTICIPANT ADVERTISERs-
Pubs, Clubs, Shops, Restaurants, Events, Holidays, Insurance whatever
I just give them a complete miss
Haveing said that you are likely to still be useing Internet Explorer, some people are but its completly out of date, miles behind Google and Mozilla - use them and get rid of the issue, and enjoy a more rapid positive and efficient reponse to everything you do .”

“Theoretical question: How many of you would be willing to pay for an ad-free version of this website? If so, how much would you pay?”

“@m_dalston. I don't know much about computers but why shouldn't we be using Internet Explorer?”
