EMERGENCY services are warning people to stay safe and warm this winter as the temperature is set to plummet this weekend.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are warning people that whilst open fires and electric blankets are cosy on a cold night, they can also bring an increased risk of fire into the home.

Firefighters advise people to check that all winter essentials are fire-safe and that fire alarms are regularly tested.

The fire service also recommends checking on older relatives and neighbours during the winter, ensuring chimneys are regularly swept to keep them free of debris, using fire guards to protect an open fire, keep portable heaters away from curtains and furniture, make sure electric blankets are unplugged before you get into bed, and ensuring that candles are secured in a proper holder, and away from materials that may catch fire.
