Air show had the X Factor
POP MUSIC fans were given a treat when two finalists from reality TV show X Factor joined local acts for a top night of entertainment.
Olly Murs and fellow finalist Stacey Solomon performed in the city to crowds of excited fans.
The star acts took to the stage for the grand finale of this year's Plymouth Air Show.
"Quite a big crowd turned out and people were going bonkers, especially for Olly," said organiser Ray McSweeney.
Also performing were pop opera girl group Milan, which includes Torpoint singer Laura Pomeroy, indie/rock covers band Joker and Plymouth's Lauren Francis. The evening finished in spectacular style with Joey The Lips.
"It was a really exciting event and very enjoyable," said Mr McSweeney.
"It was great because we really want to focus on being a big family show and we want to put the event on a par with other big shows."
The top class local and national entertainment capped off two days of fun on Plymouth Hoe for the annual air show.
There was a demonstration by RAF Sea King search and rescue helicopter and the Plymouth Lifeboat and flybys of a RAF Hawk and wing walkers and a drop in by a team of parachutists.
And, despite the wet weather, Plymouth people were out in force enjoying the sky-high spectacles.
"The weather affected things a little but everyone loved what they saw," said Mr McSweeney.
"We're looking to hold it in August next year and if we could get the navy involved and include ships it would make for a great show."

“Incidentally I read in the Daily Express this week that the lefty clowns who run Dartmouth have banned the Red Arrows from putting on a display there in case the vibrations damage historic buildings, you couldn't make it up..”

“Quote- "people these days can't seem to respect the time and money that goes into an event like this"
The only thing we can't understand is the decision to hold it in midweek.”

“Can';t remember the last time the Air show was held over a weekend.
What is the point in advertising months in advance and then never mentioning it again, bloody stupid”

“Well done to the team on what turned out to be a great airshow, people these days can't seem to respect the time and money that goes into an event like this.
@Biggles, Quite correct indeed, costs and bit and what about the people that can't get to Waddington, isn't it nice that something like this has been bought to our doorstep?
Cut Ray and the team some slack here, it was performed in what was rather dismal weather but was still pulled off (And a great sight were I was)”

“You lot don't know what an air show is. Get yourselves up to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire if you want to see a proper air show. Cost a bit but worth every penny. Seen aircraft from Air Forces from all over the world. BBMF, Spits, Hurricanes, Lancaster and Dakota. Non stop flying for hours. Brilliant.”

“I saw this advertised in This Is Plymouth (the Evening Herald online) months ago and was interested as one of my work colleagues wanted to go (and see Olly Murs). I have been keeping her up to date with this and if it wasn't for work commitments would have gone myself. So forget the excuses it WAS advertised!”

“Sorry, final word, meant to say that the reason for it being on a weekday as far as I know wasn't our doing, but because of committments from the Forces, essentially it was then or we don't have a Air Show. Next year we hope to get a weekend.”

“I would agree with David, Plymouth, I got involved with the website and graphic design side of the project, and yes, an incredible amount of time and effort went into the organising, not least arranging facilities and arrangements for the aircraft which is not an easy feat in itself. The other side that most people wouldn't consider is the health & safety, insurance, etc, etc for the PCC to even consider allowing use of the Hoe, all these things take time and if this isn't agreed on, there is no event from day one.
Re the programme, unfortunately we are in poor economic times, and as such a lot of companies aren't buying into advertising opportunities, and those that do we then have to spend time chasing artwork, etc, so more time "wasted". Admittedly lessons have been learnt here.
Don't forget that every aircraft was booked to go at a great deal of expense to the organisers, however the weather did put pay to a lot of displays, none of which we can prevent...
I designed all the posters and I know the organisers spent a lot of time and money in getting them up everywhere, plus there was the van all graphic'ed up that was out and about.
Radio Plymouth / Heart and PCC websites were also approached to get the event advertised, but either wasn't catered for or done too late.
Overall, all things considered, I felt the show went well, especially the second day, and major thanks should go to Mike and Ray and his team.”

“What awful weather for this event but well worth it.
I also knew about this event months ago, If I can remember, I found it on some "whats on guides" for the Plymouth and surrounding areas. Also on Radio Plymouth. But a day late as i heard them talking about it on air.
When I find an event that interests me i put it in my dairy. There should be a place free to tell everyone whats on ,if it a organiser or anyone thats knows of something of interest. There are lots of information of events around but it can be hard to find things sometimes.
And a very well done to everyone that organisers this event and to all the volunteers and staff at the Air Show.
Was a top 2 days me my mates and family loved it all. Cant wait till next years Air Show which I think will be bigger and better than this one and this one was great too.
So for next year everyone put in your diaries around July - August look out for advertising and at the 'whats on guides' for this and everything else that is going on in and around Plymouth.”

“David Plymouth.
How fortunate for you that you saw this advertising in so many places. Judging by the responses on this topic thus far you are clearly an exception. No one is knocking those who arranged the event but had it been more widely promoted and arranged at a time of the week more convenient to the vast majority who work 'normal' hours I am sure it would have been far better supported. I for one would have gone had I known about it. Shame about the weather.”
