Airport campaigner
SAVE-the-airport group Viable has vowed to fight any redevelopment of the airport site.
Last week Viable presented a petition of more than 37,000 signatures to Cllr Evans.
Raoul Witherall, director of Viable, said yesterday: "The people of Plymouth have just made very clear that they wish to see the airport protected from redevelopment.
"The strongest support comes from the areas closest to the airport. People living and working there will not welcome the prospect of a large new housing estate and the extra strain it will place on the already congested roads.

"We will fight any proposed redevelopment on the site vigorously.
"Plymouth has plenty of housing and shops. And there are better locations in the city where these can be built. What Plymouth lacks are high quality transport links and businesses and families want to see the airport operating again. It is a strategic asset.
"We will shortly be announcing our own bid to acquire and reopen the airport funded fully by private sector investment."

“Question: Why has this Newspaper removed comments from the several other articles published yesterday and reworked one in particular four times before redacing the comments late yesterday ?”

“Q. The airport was developed at the expense of the citizens of Plymouth on land owned by the citizens of Plymouth. What justification was there for our local representatives on the Council to hand it to a property developer without any consultation with the citizens of Plymouth?
A. The Council stand to make a very large percentage of any profits that arise from re-development of the site.”

“I concur fully with the article ....Tudor signed knowing this was going to happen how else and by what other means would an Armageddon clause get into the contract...then the current administration removes the the airport from the Area Action Plan the only true mechanism that can protect it from development...It really is time we looked at history....the country has always developed jobs then built houses to accommodate the workers...this all out onslaught to build houses during an economic downturn is at best ludicrous...especially considering locally the local jobs market, lack of lending, etc. The question to me is Our illustrious leader was recently in the paper over the Argyle fiasco offering 7 million of tax payers money to save the football club by buying back the ground...how then is it not possible to offer half this to a viable alternative and save our airport....answers please Mr leader."”

“Errr, actually blogtodi, the area of Plymouth with the highest proportion of signatures was directly around the airport. That speaks volumes about what local residents think...”

“I think you will find that the more people on board (whoever they may be) the louder the voice and therefore will be heard. The problem with this country is nobody (apart from a few with a conscience) bother to do anything about it, but will stand back and moan before, during and after the process”

“So now, Viable are appealing to the local residents for support based on the impact the development may have on their lives...says a lot about the strength of argument for their airport based on viability and profit, doesn't it?”
