PLYMOUTH Albion Ladies kept up their chase for a runners-up finish in Championship South West Two with a 12-try victory over Chipping Sodbury at Brickfields.

Albion accept the title is probably beyond them – leaders Bristol Ladies are a point ahead of the city side and both teams have two matches remaining.

Club spokeswoman and number eight Alison Cooper said: "We are still in contention for a second-place finish, but Bristol seem on top form and unlikely to concede any losses, so we are likely to win the league this season.

Albion, last season's champions, stayed on the leaders' shoulder – and will benefit from any slip-up by Bristol after thumping Chipping Sodbury 76-6 in their last home game of the season.

Albion were playing for bonus points to keep in contention for a top two finish and were keen to put five tries past their opponents for the extra point as they had against Chipping a few weeks earlier, winning 32-3.

Albion, however, surpassed that score in the first-half alone. Full-back Alex Smith opened the scoring after five minutes with a storming run to score beneath the posts.

The pace and strength of the backs continued to pressure Chipping Sodbury with wing Anna Clooke going over for a touch down and centre Helen Wilkinson bursting through three tackles to score.

With three conversions in the first half, Albion number 10 Caitlin Short also went over for a try.

Chipping Sodbury occasionally exerted some pressure on the Albion defence, but never looked like scoring.

They kicked two penalties after Albion's discipline broke down in the ruck area.

Before half time, flanker Verity Waters, who stole Chipping's line-out ball all afternoon, put a try over and, minutes later, set up Cooper to bring the score to 36-6 at half time.

Chipping's resolve dissolved in the second half and some good support play and pace saw Clooke, Short and Smith each go over for their second tries of the afternoon.

Prop Vee Thompson got in on the action with a storming run in from 30 yards.

Flanker Tandi Wallace-Sims crossed the line to score her first try for Albion Ladies, having come up from the girls' side this season.

Centre Bethan Ayling had the last say, running in a try before full time and drop-kicking the conversion.

Albion play London Welsh away next weekend in a match that will ultimately decide their final position in the league.

Albion are two points above London Welsh but need the win to secure second place.
