TOM SKELDING has been unveiled as Plymouth Albion's third new signing of the season with the big second-rower anticipating an exciting 2009/10 Championship campaign.

Skelding follows his former Exeter Chiefs team-mate, utility back Gary Kingdom, and ex-Esher forward James Waterhouse through the in-door at Brickfields.

The 27-year-old is also the second lock forward chairman of rugby Graham Dawe has recruited, with Canadian international Tyler Hotson expected to join up with his new team-mates at the start of August.

Hotson and Skelding are expected to fill the berths left by forwards Arthur Brenton and Colin Stewart, who quit Albion at the end of the 2008/09 season.

However, Hotson, busy on international duty with Canada, still has to gain the necessary work permit before he can be officially described as a new signing.

But there is no such problem with former England student international Skelding, who cut an impressive figure at his Press conference.

Skelding was enthusiastic about his one-season deal with Albion, and playing in front of the Brickfields fans.

The 6ft 6in Skelding felt it was his experience and aggression which Dawe was particularly keen to have on board.

Skelding said: "Well, I think he's looking for someone with a little bit of experience in National One and national rugby in general.

"And also a little bit of aggression and know-how.

"Hopefully, I'll fill the brief."

Dawe was equally upbeat about his new signing and agreed that Skelding's National One pedigree would be a welcome addition.

"Tom's a good signing for us and we're delighted to have him aboard," said Dawe.

"With Arthur (Brenton) leaving we needed someone in place with the necessary National One experience and competitiveness.

"Tom has all that, plus he's a ball carrier and can also run the line-out for us.

"All are important factors in the position he will be filling.

"Tom is a very mature person and a team player. I'm sure he'll be a valuable acquisition for us."

Dawe anticipates his squad will be bolstered by at least two more signings over the next week or so.

Prop George Porter seems certain to make the switch from Lydney to Devonport.

Lydney coach and former Albion stalwart Nick Bartlett is resigned to losing the promising 19-year-old.

He said: "It is an opportunity to play full-time rugby and start in the Championship at a young age for a prop."

Also expected to put pen to paper is former Newcastle back Ben Mercer.
