PEOPLE are being urged to get their cookers checked after a faulty grill killed two friends.

As reported in yesterday's Herald an inquest found Richard Smith and Kevin Branton died from carbon monoxide poisoning at their Saltash home.

The bodies of Richard, aged 30, and his 32-year-old pal Kevin were found in Woodlands Terrace in December 2010.

Experts told an inquest in Truro how odourless and highly toxic gas from the pair's Flavel Milano 50 grill spread through the house within minutes.

Following the verdict of accidental death, Cornwall Council's Trading Standards team is urging anyone with a Flavel, Leisure, New World or Belling gas cooker to have them checked out.

In 2009, 22 models of cooker were identified as posing a potential safety risk if the grill door was closed while in use, even though they still complied with the relevant British Standard at the time they were made.

A national campaign was then launched to try to recall and modify the affected cookers.

Trading standards officer Gary Webster said: "The seal on the grill door was such that by closing the door it prevented oxygen from entering the grill and therefore created the build-up of lethal carbon monoxide gas.

"The campaign resulted in a large proportion of the products being traced and modified. However, there are inevitably some cookers which have proved to be untraceable.

"The fault can be rectified by a very simple modification."

Anybody who thinks they may have a faulty model should call 0800 110 5728 or visit the Belling or New World websites.
