Angling news from the sea and shore with Mike Millman
Lee Shawcross was the winner of the £500 prize put up by Torbay Tackle Centre for the heaviest flounder in the widespread roving competition. Big fish were absent from the Kingsbridge Estuary and everywhere else and the cash plus a £76 pool went for a flattie of just 2lb 3oz 13 dram.
Just one ounce in arrears was Mike Payne who collected £300 plus £45 pool and third spot, worth tackle valued at £180, plus a £30 pool, went to Torquay’s Wayne Harwood whose fish was a mere three drams adrift. The entry was 89 and 26 fish came to the scales.
Other Plymouth anglers who were engaged in the 10th heat of the Shore League could not take part in the big money match due to the clashing time of the Paignton match weigh-in.
Plymouth-based anglers made an impact on the Wyvern division fish of the month results covering the last three of 2010 to the end of the organisation’s year at the same time in 2011. In October 2010, Mike Hodge of Rodbenders won the Senior Shore category with a fine plaice of 4-13-0 (160.4 per cent) caught in Area D. The junior boat award in that month goes to Jake Honey of D.O.E for a blonde ray of 21-11-0 (94.2) in Area C. The November Shore award was won by Mark Bryce of the Rodbenders with a pouting of 3-4-0 (216.6) in Area C. This proved to be the overall best specimen and won him the Castle Trophy from which the entry monies go to a charity of the winner’s choice. The December Shore award was secured by Roving Rods’ member, Alan Hobbs, for a flounder of 3-15-0 (157.5) in Area C.
The opening shore award was won by Andy Plant of Stonehouse SAC for a whiting of 2-9-8 (172.9) in Area C. Bryce took the March shore award with a plaice of 4-2-0 (137.5 per cent) in Area D and Roving Rods Guiliano Pellecalle led the junior shore category with a lesser spotted of 2-2-8 (86.2) in Area C.
The next Plymouth success was in June when Steve Federick of Rodbenders led the shore entries with a three bearded rockling of 2-1-0 (137.5) Area C and the junior shore was won by Roving Rods Luke Bishop who had a bass of 6-12-8 (96.8) Area A.
Steven King of Rodbenders won the July boat category with a spurdog of 16-5-0 (163) in Area C and Stuart Gray of Rodbenders made it a double by clinching the shore section with a smoothound of 16.12.0 (209.3) in Area R. The junior shore category went to Cain Davis of Pot Black for a lesser spotted of 2-6-0 (95) in Area C. Alan Hobbs gained his second success by winning the August Shore section with a small eyed ray of 12-0-0 (150) in Area C. Results. These awards will be presented at the Royal British Legion Club, Alphington Exeter on Saturday, January 28. A free buffet is being provided. Wyvern is now part of the Angling Trust’s marine division.
The Plymouth Federation’s re-arranged Flounder Competition will now be fished on Sunday (22nd) and is based on a ‘cash back’ concept, so the pay out will depend entirely on the number of entries. You can enter at all the local tackle shops for a fee of £6 seniors and £2 juniors. The close of entry will be at shop closing times on Saturday. None will be taken on match day. Competitors are reminded the minimum size of fish for the scales is 1lb 8oz. The weigh-in will be at the Morley Arms 7-7.30pm on Sunday.
