PROTESTORS are planning to hold an anti-capitalist 'occupation' of Plymouth at the start of November.

The Occupy Movement hopes to bring together hundreds of people at an as-yet undecided location in the city.

Today similar anti-austerity measures were held in 80 locations across the globe. In Italy they descended into riots.

The movement, which began with Occupy Wall Street in New York last month, is staging occupations in cities across the world.

The events are designed to cause disruption to highlight economic inequality, the power of the banks and the influence of those with money over governments.

The Plymouth event, to be held on November 5, is being organised over Facebook.

Organisers say the events rely on mass occupation and civil disobediance but are peaceful protests.

More than 700 people were arrested at the protest in New York.

An Occupy event has already been held outside the stock exchange in London.

A message on the Occupy Plymouth Facebook page reads: "This is for you, the 99% If you've ever been subjected to the abysmal 'service' of the jobcentre and been left without money to live and no way to fight back or you've been treated like a criminal for being in need and of ill health but the media makes a scapegoat of you. This is for you if you have lost, or are going to lose your job due to cuts as part of 'austerity measures' whilst companies like vodafone & topshop dodge billions of pounds worth of tax owed and banks dish out bonuses leaving us to pay the balance of the bailouts. This is for you if you are a student who fears they wont have a job to go to when they finish uni, if you're a kid at school who wont be able to follow your dream due to skyrocketing uni fees, or if you're living hand to mouth, payslip to payslip. This is for you if you've experienced the long arm of the law protecting big businesses and corporations but suffered from their absolute failure protecting us, the people. If any of these things apply to you, then do not be silent!

"We are looking to begin on 5th November. Suggestions of a specific location within Plymouth welcome as we want to make this as accessible as possible!

"It's blatantly obvious for anyone to see that the capitalist system is broke and now intent on taking us all down with it. Yet again, our jobs, homes, pensions and unions are under attack due to their crisis. As is usually the case, the unemployed and disabled are being made scape goats for the obscene greed and corruption of the Political and Corporate Class. Businesses are going bust, child poverty is on the increase, university tuition fees have quadrupled along with the price of our most basic needs. Energy bills have more than doubled due to unbridled profiteering and continuous rises in inflation. Life for us continues to to be a struggle, yet the banking industry can smile and award itself with billions in bonuses and benefits for destroying the global economy and our future. This system doesn't need reform it needs to be overthrown.

"We can no longer look to our government as a solution to the problems we face. They have deceived and betrayed our trust countless times through propaganda and lies. We intend to democratically disarm the corporate war loving governments of the world and replace them with a new order that represents the needs and aspirations of the many and not those of the privileged few. We intend to do this through a global non violent, unified resistance. To resist injustice is both our democratic freedom and responsibility. Don't be afraid, the beginning is near. It's time to to create the society that each of us deserves."

“Making use of a product made by a corporation doesn't mean you condone their behaviour. Also, the fact that these products are used suggests that the protesters support a society in which we have the technology, skills and resources available to make them.
It's like saying that by having sex you condone rape.

While we can reason on the details, it is simply nitpicking... the fact is what I mentioned earlier about the rising taxes and cuts on spending. Meaning we pay more and have less both personally and as a community. If you're happy with that - then thats great, and good for you.

The economy may be stabilised, for a while, but it will fail... Regardless of political parties... it is a self destructive system, meaning we need to forget about stabilising and bailouts and concentrate on a new economic and social system that benefits everyone equally. Which is positive, right? Labour/Conservative... whatever! They're all puppets and its the same bankers, the same corporations the same 1% elite that pull the strings!!

As I said earlier I don't have the answers or the perfect solution, but I do support a cause that brings people together to display our disdain at the current system, and suggest alternatives. I'd rather try and be part of the solution than sit back and let another corrupt government 'promise' to sort it out for me. Which, by going on track record, isn't likely to happen! I don't understand why people would oppose this to the point of violence.

We need to stop dividing ourselves about which political party did it, stop finger pointing, assigning blame to past PMs and stop hoping that someone else will fix it for us.

The slogan of the 99% against the 1% is applicable, and collectively we have more intellect and more power than politicians, bankers and corporations.. we have the ability to do great things for our country, once we realise the system is broken and it's going to take some effort from each and every one of us to change it.

"A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people"

"The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were".”

“Well said Lewis_2S2233: The conservatives are trying to sort out the financial mess that, once again, a Labour goverment has left us in. Time after time in living memory this has been the case.
Moving on to the anti-capitalist protests, they organise on facebook, organise on mobile phone networks, sleep in designer tents, buy their food supplies in supermarkets. They are supporting the capitalist system all the time! The hypocracy is astounding!
Its also interesting to note that there has been a backlash against protesters in Greece. Counter demo's and violence has flared up between groups who are sick and tired of these communist agitators. Lets hope somebody opposes these 'revolutionaries' over here.”

“Right time to stick my proverbial oar in on this one....

    Dear whatsallowed & RussellJack

I am a 25 year old employed male who has put myself through university, and have been employed for the last 9 years in some way or another, and have never claimed a single benifit in my entire life.

So why is it that I come on here and find people like you assuming that I am a "benifit cheat" and am not "fit to breathe the same air as you" and must also be a "clown"?

To be honest I am a little surprised that you have taken your eyes away from your Daily Mail long enough to read these comments, let alone the article. I am going to go to this protest because I am not happy in a world where a teenager who has nothing becasue of the vast rate of unemployment and lack of qualifications because our education and social systems have told him he is worth nothing as a human being, is given a prison sentance for stealing a bottle of water. Yet a miilionaire businessman is allowed to embezzle millions to ac***ilate a personal wealth and because he has freinds in the right places and gets nothing more than a slap on the wrist. These 2 people have both commited a crime, yet 1 is harshly punished and the other is allowed to continue until he gets caught again.

No, I am not poor so I do not suffer the most injustice, but as a human being with a moral compass, I cannot allow things like these to happen, I'm not saying I want a brand new car and phone, but simply that everyone has the right to exsist on an equal par, and shouldnt have to make the choice between heat and food.

    I eagerly await your response.

    Regards.”

“If you had taken the time to read some earlier comments, you would have known that I have been in full time employment for over 8 years. Actually, for the past 10 years I have only been out of work for about 3 weeks.

If you had taken the time to read the news article, you would have known that this is not about benefits but actually about capitalism and money hungry, greed corporations having our country by the nuts. Not helped by our fiat currency in an economic system that is sure to fail.

I do not, nor have I ever claimed benefits.

Could you please explain why you presume that people protesting against capitalism in order to try and bring about a change resulting in a fair, balanced economic system are automatically benefit cheats who don't deserve to breathe the same air as you?

Maybe up there on your pedestal the air is better, but I think you need to come down for a bit, because you've made yourself seem like nothing more than an ignorant fool in public. Well done.”

“Lewis... No problem, I will always be willing to discuss things and listen to other peoples point of view. Its fine to disagree with me, I just feel that everyone will be affected by future events and its important to rally together for change when you feel something is wrong.
Personally I work full time in a job that (for the foreseeable future at least!!) is stable. But I am going to stand for my own freedoms and rights to protest my displeasure with the way the country is being run and also to stand by and represent the unfortunate people that the 'suicidal' monetary system in a capitalist state has left in a far worse state than me. Maybe it won't change anything at all, but like I said - i feel I have a moral obligation to speak out when I feel that something is wrong. I just can't sit back and watch bankers and corporations destroy us!

As far as trouble, well - I hope that nothing bad happens too. And too anyone reading considering coming; If you're looking for a violent protest, or somewhere to kick off, don't bother turning up! People like that do nothing to help, and will only draw negative attention, they should be singled out by the majority of us peaceful protestors and be asked to chill or go home.

I agree with your last point, and change is required both at a corporate banker level, government level and a personal level. The change required should bring about an fair, balanced and equal system where no-one should have to starve to death, sleep on the streets, die from the cold in their own homes. We are the 99% and we do need to look after each other as we are all being made to suffer in this self destructive system together. I just think that maybe if things we to change in this way, it would be of benefit to everyone - me and you and everyone else. And while you may not agree with the idea, you have to agree that the result could be better than the way things are now.”
