Astor B held Railway B (Mike Briggs 3) to 4-4 but then lost the last two sets in a 6-4 defeat. Briggs and John Palmer won the sixth point beating Peter Kratochvila and Mike Trembeth 11-8, 11-8, 11-7. Dave Pellow (Inter City B) lost all three in five games at Astor D and although Ian Roper (3) played well for City, Astor won 6-4.

Two-player Woodland Fort G won all the sets played through Ian Lindsay and Rob Batten, in a 7-3 win at Inter City E with five sets going to five games in Division Four. Woolwell M came back strongly from 3-2 down to win 7-3 at Woodland Fort H thanks to three from Andy Helliwell and the doubles with Jacob Squires.

Helliwell nearly let a two game lead slip in beating Nigel Aston 11-3, 11-6, 5-11, 2-11, 11-7. Woodland Fort E were not at full strength at Fort F who won 6-4. BREWIN DOLPHIN MANNAMEAD WINTER TENNIS LEAGUE by David Williams

IN THE ladies' Division A the champions, Michelle Cooke and Liz Morley, were stunned by the excellent early play by Janet Butler and Linda Haston who won the first set 6-0. Cooke and Morley raised their standard in the next two sets and were relieved to emerge winners 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. Tania Belcher and Debbie Bradbury made their debuts and in an enjoyable match they found Joy Pallow and Sue Peers-Jones just the better combination, losing 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

Chrissie Bassett and Coral Smith defeated Barbara Jensen and Debbie Grieve 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Joan McGregor and Helen Foote did not drop a game in beating Michelle Pooley and Suzuko Reed.

In the mixed doubles there was the usual slow start from Richard Avent and Jenny Snell against Dudley Tolkien and Janet Butler. A good first set was won 6-4 by Avent and Snell and then with improved play from Snell the pair ran out winners 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. Much closer was the win by Simon Dusting and Hannah Odam. After two tie-breaks, Dusting and OIdam were more in control in the third set as they beat Howard and Lyn Helliwell 6-5, 6-5, 6-2.

Neil Hunt and Simon Yeo got off to the best possible start in Division A of the men's doubles. Playing against Chris Williams and Paul Wardle, Hunt and Yeo were the more positive pair throughout and fully deserved a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win. The champions last season, Phil Harbottle and Phil Ruse, won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 against Steve Kingston and Adam Mudford, who play three divisions lower in the Summer League.

In Division B the match between Dave Pemberton and Bernard Lien-Lambert against Jon Shackel and Pete Ireland did not beat the time limit. No bonus points were awarded when at one set each time was called at 4-4 in the final set.

Pemberton and Lien-Lambert were on court again playing Jamie Stephenson and sub John Davies. In a competitive match, Stephenson and Davies did enough early on to win 6-2, 6-2, 2-6. Also dropping the third set from two sets up were Ron Cole and Rob Thomas in a 6-4, 6-2, 2-6 win over Declan O'Connell and Yeng Sui. In a tight match Chris Shorter and Phil Ticehurst overcame Paul Matthews and Simon Dusting 6-4, 3-6, 6-5 (7-1).

There were wins in Division C for Martin Whitmill and sub Matt Ewens over Lester Ellicott and Dave Graham 6-3, 5-6, 6-2 and for Mike Madden and Jason Holland over Mike Foote and Gary Eato 6-3, 6-4, 3-6.
