THE city's main shopping centre has appealed for people to fill up and donate "bags of lovely things" at a special event next week in aid of a heart disease charity.

The Great British Bag-athon is run by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and is held in Plymouth at Drake Circus.

Organisers will give out bags to be taken away and dropped off in the mall when filled with clothing, CDs, books and toys.

Each load is worth £20 on average to the charity.

Drake Circus centre director Greg Lumley appealed for as many people as possible to take part.

He said: "Why not get together with your family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues and see how many bags you can fill and donate?

"This is a fantastic way to show your support to someone who is living with heart disease or celebrate the memory of a loved one."

BHF's Area Manager said donations were crucial to the fight against heart disease – the nation's single biggest killer.

She thanked donors in advance for taking part.

The launch takes place on Saturday, September 22, with the Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth donating the first bag at noon.

The bag-athon continues until Sunday September 30.

Filled bags can be dropped off to the BHF shop directly after the event.

“So they want you to fill a bag with new stuff which they are going to resell in their charity shops for half the value?”
