Royal Marine Band…3 City College Plymouth…1

THIS Devon County FA Midweek Cup tie at Spickernell was the only fixture to be played in the Devon Wednesday League yesterday as waterlogged pitches again took its toll.

As it turned out the tie was the proverbial game of two halves as both teams used the slope of the pitch to their advantage with the Band coming good with two goals in the last 10 minutes to progress to the quarter-finals.

Using the slope to their benefit in the first half, City College controlled the game but failed to take many chances.

Their only success coming when good play by Jordy Barton led to Jake Heggs finishing with aplomb.

In the second half the Bandsmen used the slope and their tall forwards to great advantage and, on the hour, equalised from a corner. Peter Wolffenden being ideally placed at the far post to smash in a volley.

Despite the College having many attacks, a strong Band defence held firm.

And, with the pitch starting to cut up and extra-time looming the the Band went ahead on 80 minutes with Darren Spurgeon turning on a sixpence to curl a cracking shot into the top corner.

The Band sealed victory on 85 minutes with a clinical finish from Jordan Wilson in a quick, counter-attack as College went in search of an equaliser.
