CHESTNUTS roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your toes – and Gordon Sparks dressed as an elf.

Those were some of the factors bringing a festive feel to a special seasonal day hosted by the Association of Barbican Businesses.

Shops were dressed to the nines and their owners donned costume to add to the atmosphere, and BBC Radio Devon presenter Gordon Sparks helped to man Santa's Grotto and served hot chestnuts to raise money for his favourite charity, Macmillan.

Association chairman Ben Shearn, who runs bars the Treasury and the Watering Hole, said: "We have around 80 members and this was a real show of unity.

"We were trying to raise awareness of the Barbican, and business was really good.

"Even the hailstorm was helpful, leaving a white scattering which added to the Christmas atmosphere."

Ben said shoppers really seemed to appreciate the Barbican's blend of traditional businesses with new and contemporary shops, bars and restaurants.
