BANKING giant Barclays has revealed that 428 workers were paid £1 million or more last year, including five who got more than £5 million despite a year of scandal and falling profits.

The group's annual report also showed that chief executive Antony Jenkins was awarded a total pay package worth £2.6 million in 2012, including a £1.5 million long-term incentive bonus due to pay out in future years if he meets performance targets.

Its pay details will stoke controversy after the bank reported pre-tax profits plunging to £246 million from £5.9 billion in 2011 following a scandal-hit year which saw it pay £290 million for its Libor rigging settlement and £2.5 billion to cover mis-selling claims.

LEADING conservationists have won a High Court battle against plans for a wind farm they warn will result in substantial harm to a heritage area "of national significance".

English Heritage and the National Trust say the case has national implications.

They supported East Northamptonshire District Council's successful legal bid to block proposals submitted by West Coast Energy for four 300ft (91m) turbines on farmland at Barnwell Manor in Sudborough.

Mrs Justice Lang ruled at Londons High Court that the decision to give the go-ahead was legally flawed and must be quashed.

DETECTIVES investigating the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old schoolgirl on a bus have issued a picture of the suspect as they appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The man, a black male in his early 20s who was wearing a distinctive "tiger" jacket, is believed to have been on buses in and around the Birmingham area around the time Christina Edkins was fatally stabbed on a double-decker in Hagley Road in the city yesterday.

Post-mortem tests have revealed that the teenager died from a single stab wound to the chest following the attack on the number 9 bus during the morning rush-hour.

Police have urged anyone who saw the man, who was also carrying a white bag, between 6am and 1pm on Thursday, to contact them.
