Yes, this bid is about staging a fantastic year of creative excellence for the people of Plymouth and showcasing this great city to the rest of the country. But it is just as much about generating economic activity and jobs. You only have to look at those cities which have had the vision to pitch for similar events in the past – Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Bristol and, of course, this year's City of Culture, Derry/Londonderry – to see the huge benefits they gained whether they succeeded or not.

City of Culture provides an opportunity for people from all walks of life in Plymouth to come together with a common purpose."

“Yes Plymouth can become the City of Culture which is good for the City but there is only one small problem. I feel we are doing things backwards in this City. Can Plymouth City Council have the same enthusiasm to re- open the Airport which in my opinion is far more important because the the CITY OF CULTURE is only for a short time, where as the Airport is for our long term future. I know SHH have a strong hold on the Airport for only one pupose to sell it to the highest bidder for their share holders. Well Plymouth City Council must have the power to stop this happening . I am a share holder of a different type which is a council tax payer of this city. The people of Plymouth have been paying for the Airport through their council tax since 1931. Just for the record how many people in Plymouth know that Londonderry is the City of Culture for 2013, THEY have an airport. !! The Herald campaigne is brilliant to promote the City of Plymouth but lets continue to campaign for the Airport as well as you have done since the Airport was closed. Well done to the Editor. “As usual the self proclaimed "Culture Experts" are out on this one.
How much do they know about staging such events?
OK constuctive well reasoned criticism is one thing but the Whingeing only sells Plymouth short and plays into the hands of our Cultural Competitor Cities!”

“Why should I 'belt up'? Does Plymouth have a 10,000+ all seated indoor venue - No! So that rules out those particular events then doesn't it!

Don't believe everything you read in the newspaper!

The editor of this newspaper seems to he Manchester up as something Plymouh could be.

    Greater Manchester has:

    1) 20k seat indoor arena
    2) a large exhibition hall that can be configured into a 12k seated
    3) the largest stadium outside of London
    4) the largest airport outside of London
    5) more theatres than any other provincial city in the uk
    6) some of the finest art collections in the uk

I could go on, but I can't be bothered. 25 years ago Manchester was a dump! Sadly I don't believe Plymouth will ever have the leadership to turn things around!!”

“Why the rehash with the same false statements!

Plymouth with never host BBC SPOTY or the Brits, regardless whether it wins this title! It doesn't have a venue large enough to host them!

Manchester has never 'pitched' for a meaningless 'Culture' title. It doesn't need too!”
