CAR users are being urged to take the train for the international car free day.

The event on Saturday September 22 is being backed by the Ivybridge Rail Users' Group who are encouraging everyone to give their local rail services a try on the day.

  1. First Great Western train

The car free day aims to remind people that there are alternatives to the car and most of them will save money and stress, help reduce pollution and make the streets safer.

A return trip to Plymouth costs about £3.30 per adult and can arrive within 15 minutes.

Totnes is 13 minutes away on the train and a return journey is likely to be less than the cost of parking and fuel at £4.40 per adult.

Katie Reville, a spokesperson for the group said: "Many of us are so used to jumping into our cars that we forget that we've got a great train station in Ivybridge and the rail fares are very reasonable.

Local rail travel can be made even cheaper by buying a Devon and Cornwall Railcard for £10. The card entitles you to a third off all off peak journeys within Devon and Cornwall and allows up to 4 children to travel with you for only £1 each."

Ivybridge Station is served by 17 trains on Saturdays, heading both east and west, including three high-speed services to London.

“My son has been using Ivybridge train 7:26 to get to Exeter. It's being discontinued in December with no alternative. WITH SUCH AN APPALLING SERVICE IT'S NO WONDER PEOPLE DRIVE.... I AM ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED. He has to take his cycle to get across Exeter so the bus is no good as an alternative.”

“@ DrDoctorX - And how much advanced booking would I need to get a return fare for £80? On the trains website a day return to Nottingham is £121 if I wanted to go tomorrow.”

“Go anywhere by train you must be joking had my fill of late/cancelled trains which are overcrowded dirty and uncomfortable and as pointed out hideously expensive these days. I will NEVER go on a train again in this country.”

“So, we all move to Totnes? Land of the strange hallucinogenic air? Perhaps the writer of the article comes from there. That would explain a lot.”

“So you get to Plymouth on the train, then what? Unless you work in the City Centre you have to juggle Bus services to get to any of the city's industrial estates which with the current Bus services just isn't practical.
I'd love to use public transport to get to work but while it's possible it would take me 50 minutes, waiting around for buses and I'd still have to walk the last couple of miles, and that's a simple trip from Stoke to Roborough. When I leave late at night it would take me a good hour and I'd have to walk about 25% of my journey.Using my own transport takes 20 minutes door to door.”

“If Ivybridge is a great train station I'd hate to see a rubbish one. You could stand on the desolate platform there for hours and not one single train would stop there.”
