Big names sponsor sports awards
LEADING city organisations and businesses have stepped forward to sponsor The Herald Sports Personality Awards, which will be held at Plymouth Pavilions on Monday, December 1.
Major players in the fields of commerce, sport and education are putting their weight behind The Herald in supporting grassroots sport in the city and celebrating sporting achievements throughout 2008.
And what a year it has been – and what a night in prospect after an unprecedented year of success for Plymouth-area participants at the Beijing Olympic Games.
Who better to grace The Herald's seventh sports personality awards than Olympic legend Dame Kelly Holmes, who will be guest of honour for the glittering occasion.
Once again, there are six highly-competitive main categories in which readers of The Herald can nominate their favourites – and each one has its own sponsor.
So too does the 'Champagne Moment' – a new addition last year – which celebrates the outstanding highlight of the sporting year.
The six categories are: Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality, Amateur Sports Personality, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Sport.
Well-established city firm Michael Spiers Jewellers of Cornwall Street is the overall sponsor.
Babcock Marine are sponsoring the Outstanding Contribution category.
Devon Pine & Oak are sponsoring the Team of the Year category.
Plymouth Argyle are sponsoring the Amateur Sports Personality category.
The University of Plymouth are the backers of the Young Sports Personality awards.
The Coach of the Year category is sponsored by city-based company A4e, located in St Andrew's Street.
Sponsoring the Champagne Moment of the Year, is another well-established firm, VH Graddon & Sons Vending Ltd.
Our thanks go to them all.
Meanwhile, there is still time to send in your nominations.
Nominations in all categories can be sent to The Herald via email at sportsawards@theplymouthherald.co.uk or by post to Sport, The Herald, 17 Brest Road, Derriford, Plymouth PL6 5AA. Or you can log on to The Herald's website www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/spoty08
Please clearly mark your nominations 'Herald Sports Personalities' and don't forget to include your name, address and daytime telephone number.

“Dave Smith should be awarded the outstanding contribution to sport award due to the time and effort he gives to the community. Dave has time for all walks of life and people of all ages. He can really relate to everyone and help them when they are at their most vulnerable. Dave wants to see people achieve their goals and will do everything in his power to help them succeed. Not only is Dave a father figure for kids/ young adults that train with him and Scott Dann at the gym in green bank but he also has his hands full at home with four children of his own who adore him very much.”
