A FAMILY-RUN horse and pony rescue centre is preparing to celebrate its second birthday – and plans are in place to expand and offer therapy sessions.

Ponderosa Pony Rescue, a small not-for-profit organisation based at Colin Farm in Efford, is dedicated to the care of horses and ponies that have been abandoned, mistreated or are going to slaughter.

The team of volunteers, led by father and daughter Dave and Cory Clark, moved from Lee Moor to Efford last year, transforming a field blighted by fly-tippers into a haven for rescued animals.

Cory, 25, said: "We feed them, make sure they have got hay and that they are all comfortable.

"They come here from various places – some people can't afford to keep them or they no longer want them in the winter months."

The centre will celebrate its second anniversary on March 2 with a party featuring pony rides and a cake sale.

Dave said: "We receive a lot of donations and we want to thank everybody.

"We have proven quite popular, children seem to love it here."

Dave and Cory are in talks with local care homes and schools to provide sessions to aid relaxation and wellbeing, and are hoping the centre can grow over the next few years.

"If we can get more people involved and more visitors that would be great," Dave said.

"We would love to get to charity status, we would like to get another field and expand.

"A lot of people still don't know we are here."

The centre relies on donations which go towards the cost of vet bills, dentists, hay and food.

They also need clothes, tools and household goods.
