Bomber's message of hate
THE sentencing of Muslim convert Nicky Reilly, who tried to kill diners in a restaurant, has been put off amid concerns about his mental health.
Reilly, 22, from Plymouth, pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder and preparing an act of terrorism.

Reilly left a suicide note in his bedroom blaming the “disgusting”
behaviour of Britons and the “war on Islam” for his attack, the court
heard today.
And the court heard his plot was foiled when he couldn't open the toilet door after going into the bathroom to prime the home-made bomb.
His rambling note, printed in red ink, attacks drunkenness and sexual
immorality as well as the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.
In it, Muslim convert Reilly insists: “I have not been brainwashed or indoctrinated.”
The note reads: “In the name of God most gracious, most merciful: why I did it.
“Everywhere Muslims are suffering at the hands of Britain, Israel and America. We are sick of taking all the brutality from you.
“You have imprisoned over 1,000 Muslims in Britain alone in your war on Islam.
“You torture and destroy Muslim lives by taking a father or a son or a brother, even you torture Muslim women.
“In Britain it’s OK for a girl to have sex without marriage and if she gets pregnant she can get an abortion so easily.
“When you are getting drunk on Friday and Saturday night your behaviour is worse than animals.
“You have sex in nightclub toilets. You urinate in shop doorways. You shout your foul and disgusting mouth off in the street.
“It is unacceptable to Allah and the true religion Islam. Britain and USA and Israel have no real rules.
“All us Muslims have seen the pictures of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq,
and you all know what you do to our brothers in Guantanamo Bay.
“Sheikh Usama has told you the solution on how to end this war between us and many others have as well but you ignore us.
“Our words are dead until we give them life with our blood. Leave our lands and stop your support for Israel.
“I have not been brainwashed or indoctrinated. I am not insane.
“I am not doing it to escape a life of problems or hardships. I am
doing what God wants from his mujahideen. We love death as you love
life.
“Muslims welcome death because we will get jennah, inshallah, for defending the weak and oppressed Muslims.
“You kill one of my people, I kill one of yours.
“I have simply seen for myself the brutality and corruption of America,
Britain and Israel for myself and my common sense told me it is
unacceptable and wrong.
“The word is the word of the sword until the wrongs have been righted.”
Reilly is the least sophisticated person to be charged with terrorism, the Old Bailey was told today.
Reilly, “lacked cunning” despite making explosives and targeting the restaurant in Exeter, according to his barrister.
Kerim Fuad told the court that Reilly should be made the subject of an interim hospital order which could have delayed his sentencing for at least 11 months.
But the application was rejected by Mr Justice Calvert-Smith who said: “A year’s wait until this young man is sentenced is simply out of the question.”
He put off sentencing to January 30, next year, to allow reports from two psychiatrists.
Mr Fuad had told him that doctor’s had expressed concerns about the mental state of Reilly who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and has learning difficulties.
Mr Fuad said: “This defendant is not sophisticated in the slightest in any aspect of his life.
“He may well be the least cunning person ever to have come before this court for any offence of this magnitude, for terrorism.
“I do not want to diminish the sheer horror of this defendant’s actions.
“Innocent people could have been injured, maimed or killed. It may be a mixture of sheer good fortune and the defendant’s incompetence that the damage was restricted.”
He was not the usual person who was hell-bent on unleashing terror on the public.
But he had been influenced by others on the internet. “Their input has fed and fuelled the dangerous nonsense that filled his head,” added Mr Fuad.
The judge said anything other than a long term of incarceration in a secure institution was not possible.
Reilly, of King Street, Plymouth, pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder and preparing an act of terrorism.
The court was given details of how dozens of customers at the Giraffe restaurant in Exeter, fled in panic when three soft drink bottles exploded in the toilets on May 22 this year.
Reilly intended to run out into the packed dining area clutching the caustic soda bottle bomb to his stomach, the court heard.
But he could not open the toilet cubicle door in the seconds after he set the bomb to explode.
The delay caused the volatile nail-filled device to detonate in his hands, leaving him badly injured.
Reilly also considered bombing Charles Cross Police Station, Plymouth’s Drake Circus shopping centre and Devonport Dockyard.
He used the internet to research how to make bombs using caustic soda, kerosene and nails.
Stuart Baker, prosecuting, said Reilly converted to Islam between 2002 and 2003.
“He became interested in Jihad at an early stage,” said Mr Baker.
“He himself, alone, wanted to be a terrorist. He told doctors he was interested in terrorism from June 2003.
“He said he wanted to be a terrorist and wanted to take a course in engineering to build explosive devices.”
Reilly changed his name to Mohammad Rashid Saeed Alim in 2004 in tribute to the 9/11 New York suicide attackers.
Muslims in the Plymouth area did not support his views but he had found encouragement in an internet chatroom from two people with Arabic names.
He had also downloaded videos from the YouTube website, including some on how to make bombs and on martyrdom.
Between May 15 and May 22 this year he made 500 searches on the web.
In his chatroom messages he was advised not to target innocent people in public places.
But Reilly had been intent on becoming a martyr by killing himself and others. He wrote: “That is my dream.”
He decided to use hundreds nails to make his bombs more potent and even put forward the idea of bombing a bus, said Mr Baker.
In a suicide note left by Reilly, he had said: “I have not been brainwashed or indoctrinated.”
