CND campaign over N-sub proposal attracts support
A PETITION opposing proposals to build a nuclear submarine dismantling facility in Plymouth has attracted over 100 signatures.
Campaigners from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament are taking to the streets this week to drum up support ahead of a mass demonstration on Saturday.

Tony Staunton, a CND national committee member, said people are "concerned" about the proposals which would see 27 former nuclear-powered submarines cut up in Plymouth over a 60-year period.
The Ministry of Defence will be staging public consultation events until next spring about the possibility of setting up the Submarine Dismantling Project at Devonport Naval Base.
Plymouth is one of two sites being considered for the project.
About 300 people are expected to attend Saturday's CND demonstration. It will start at the Guildhall at noon, move to Devonport Park at 2pm then to the base's Camels Head gate.

“100 signatures ? Wow, I'm impressed - where did they collect that many - at one of their tea parties ? Haven't seen or heard of them going out in the streets facing Joe Public. Bit safer than facing the MoD Plod and the Old Bill come the "day of disruption" methinks.”

“Well done PJPlym - nicely pointed out - odd that CND should be protesting AGAINST decommissioning Nuke boats!! But in practical terms, these boats will be decommissioned somewhere, and it won't be in the wilds unless the protestors wish to foot the multi-£M bill for the new facilities. So my vote is for Plymouth, which has been handling nuclear refits for decades antyway, and needs the work badly. Where there's muck there's money, and I'd rather see it coming Plymouth's way, despite the (remote) risks. I imagine that IF there ARE any local protestors, they will mostly already be in a job?”

“I¿d be happy if you stopped talking tripe Wrecker. Apart from the wording of your blog, fallout is a by product of a nuclear explosion, in fact nuclear weapons are likely to be detonated some several thousand feet to produce such fallout. Nuclear reactors on the other hand, by their design, not by any safety device, cannot explode like a weapon. I suppose with a massive amount of bad luck and bad management, (Not something these Navy chaps are famous for), if someone stole the control rods, and the sea at the same time, a reactor might get hot enough to melt, but I think the odds are against such a catastrophe.
The reason the surface fleet has moved to Portsmouth, is a result of a conversation between Bob Ainsworth and Paul Lambert that I suspect went something like this:-
¿Er you know Bob, we need an answer on these carriers, got to begin work you know¿. ¿Ah yes Paul, I was just wondering where we should base our votes, I mean boats, those Janners don¿t really need them, just like they didn¿t need the Nimrods, Harriers, the JSF, or those damn submarines¿..until after they¿ve been scrapped of course! We¿ll give them¿..er¿.some Marines. That should make up for it¿. ¿Jolly good Bob, now how about some planes for these carriers¿. ¿Ah yes Paul, I¿d been meaning to talk to you about that¿..¿
Incidentally I¿m a visitor to Halifax, Canada, which also hosted HMS Torbay in the eighties, a nuclear powered submarine, and I leave within twenty miles of the dockyard, and served on submarines for nearly ten years. I don¿t have two heads, or look like the ready brek man.”

“It's always laughable to see the uneducated comments of those who want to see the subs taken away.”

“Find that comment typical from someone who does not live with it day in and day out perhaps her Majesty would not mind it if we stored all the Nuclear Reactor cores in the grounds of Balmoral, after all it is her Government that is Imposing this S**t on us, or perhaps Dave wouldn't mind it being stored in Halifax”

“Wasn't that their catchphrase in the eighties Mike? I'm sure I remember those car stickers with the smiley atom..
One hundred signatures. You'd better get cracking if you want support before Saturday. Incidently I do hope that Devon and Cornwall Police are billing CND directly for the event.”

“MOD does not care for the safety of the people of Plymouth, because if they did the facility would have been put in a place away from a major populated city, people want to ask them self why did they not build the facility in Portsmouth where the Submarine training facility was and where the Subs use to be berthed, why simple the people of Portsmouth would not have it unlike the so called promises from the MOD about job security with in Devonport, people want to wake up and smell the Bull S**t the MOD and the British Government is Shovelling, the only reason the Surface Fleet work was sent to Portsmouth was because of the High Risk to them being exposed to nuclear fall out from possible accident, because if any of our surface fleet was exposed to the Radiation they would be unusable, and as most of the Submarines at sea most of the time they are not at risk.
The mod have shown in the past by their actions in selling MOD property for housing development knowing that the ground had nuclear waste buried on it, does that show they care at all !!”

“Seems a strange thing for CND to be marching in protest at the dismantling of nuclear subs.”
