My CV for heaven... yours faithfully
MANY readers will be familiar with the art of crafting a good CV (curriculum vitae), usually in association with a job application.
I invite those, with a little imagination, to consider one from a prospective candidate seeking a place in the kingdom of heaven – a response to the gospel message. Read the following letter accompanying his application.
'Sir, Having given earnest heed to the message of the gospel, and having read the relevant literature, I wish to offer myself as a suitable candidate for the kingdom of heaven. I count this to be the wisest possible decision, and trust it will be approved, thereby securing my place among the elect.
'In reading your manifesto, I am made aware of my shortcomings by failing to measure up to the righteous standards demanded in the law section of your works. I would, therefore, defer to the more – if I may say so – user-friendly section on the subject of grace. Here, my heart is warmed, faith quickened, confidence assured.

'Here, I learn that divine wisdom has found a way to pardon those condemned under an exacting law, without the necessity of the lawgiver turning a blind eye to its just requirements. I am given to understand that this doctrine is termed justification by faith – apart from the works of the law. Having acted upon my present light, I trust to receive more light as I progress in this vital teaching.
'Conscience being further awakened to the folly of procrastination, I eagerly await, Sir, your speedy reply to my application, feeling positive that it will be well received.
Yours faithfully, Justas Iam.'
