The charity has benefited to the tune of £10,581 through individual donations, sponsorships and a contribution from the race organisers.

Chicks fundraiser Mick Ryan said: "The money will go a long way towards funding free respite breaks for disadvantaged children and is in fact more than enough money to fund a six-day camp."

Mr Ryan said the charity was delighted to be nominated as the official charity for one of the top races in the country.

"The association with the event is important as it helped spread the word about what we do."

"But we also had 20 children and adults running the one-mile fun run to support us and another 70 runners in the main event."

Race Director Nigel Rowe presented a cheque to Chicks at Plymouth's Duke of Cornwall Hotel, which sponsored this year's race and accommodated many of the elite athletes.

Director Jonathan Morcomb said: "We were delighted to put up some of the athletes and make sure they had a good breakfast before the race.

"We always have a lot of visitors coming to the hotel because of the half marathon so we are delighted to be one of its sponsors."

Mr Morcomb has competed in the race several times himself and said the atmosphere always pulled him along.

"Plymouth is an amazingly well supported half marathon that really gives you an appetite for running."

The Plymouth Half Marathon's main sponsor is Babcock and a number of other local businesses include estate agents Mansbridge and Balment, Specsavers and Active 8.
