The centrepiece is a fancy dress parade of about 100 young people from the Sundial at 10am.
Children have made banners and costumes with the help of artists at Stiltskin, on the theme of fire and heat. Spectators are invited to wear something colourful and join the procession.
The Respect Parade will end at Plymouth Guildhall and signal the start of the festival at 11am.
The free family event includes live music performances from Pearl of Africa Children's Choir, world food and activities for children.
Global musicians will perform at the Guildhall between 5pm and 11pm on Saturday for the Rhythms 4 Respect event.
Siga La Salsa, Chimanimani and Too Hot will serve up a heady mixture of African beats, ska and salsa.
Tickets cost £5 and are available from Vibes Music, the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Office or on the door on the night.
Two free zumba sessions will be held in front of the Guildhall at 2pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday. They are open to any age and any ability.
A spokeswoman for organisers Kaos said: "The Plymouth Respect Festival is an important event in the city's calendar for highlighting diversity and celebrating differences. A spin-off strand of events is called Respect 4 Respect – with events and shows throughout the year to demonstrate the wide-reaching effects of the festival."
