IT LOOKED like Plymouth was being invaded by Cybermen yesterday – but it was all just a publicity stunt for the new series of Doctor Who.

Cybermen and other creatures from the show's past wandered around the Piazza in the city centre as part of the sci-fi event.

Some fans dressed up like the Doctor to add to the experience – and a selection of 3D Doctor Who mini-films were shown on the big screen.

The event was held to add to the Doctor Who hype before the 11th Doctor Matt Smith's first episode is aired on BBC One tonight (Sat).

Doka Chapman, socialite on Plymouth's alternative scene and ardent Doctor Who fan, dressed up as legendary Doctor Tom Baker.

He said: "It was good fun. My friend Sarah and I really enjoyed it and it whet our appetites for the new series."

Sarah Moass, a DJ at the Redeemer nights at Union Street's Crash Manor venue, added: "The Cyberman we saw was really realistic!"

Eve Wooldridge, of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: "It seems that everyone is really looking forward to the new episode of Doctor Who.

"I think there is a lot of anticipation from people keen to see how the new doctor compares".

“The best Dr. Who episode I ever saw was when archaeologists dug into an ancient man-made hill and came face to face with a demon, seriously scary stuff there..”

“I've just seen the new Doctor and I'm disappointed, he reminds me of an overgrown public schoolboy, and the whole prog format is aimed at kids just like its been for the past 40 years, ironically time seems to have stood still for it..”

“Quote- "I think there is a lot of anticipation from people keen to see how the new doctor compares"

He can't be any worse than Tennent who always seemed like an angst-ridden student.
Jon Pertwee was one of my favourites, "Do you have visual contact?" he was asked in an episode; "If you mean can I see it, the answer is yes" he replied”
