GOALKEEPER Jake Cole hopes the homework Plymouth Argyle have done on Torquay United will reap its rewards when the two Devon rivals meet at Plainmoor today (3pm).

Argyle will be trying to build on their first League Two win of the season, which came when they beat Northampton Town 3-2 at Home Park last Saturday.

Cole (above), an ever present for the Pilgrims this term, told Herald Sport: "We have had a good week's preparation.

"We know what they (Torquay) do. We have researched them and we know how we want to play.

"We have got a gameplan and, hopefully, we can get the result we want."

Argyle crashed to only their fourth away league defeat against Torquay in 17 previous meetings when they lost 3-1 at Plainmoor last season.

Cole was injured that mid-November afternoon but still sat on the substitutes' bench as cover for Romain Larrieu, now the Pilgrims' assistant boss.

Cole admitted that match had been an occasion where Argyle's forward planning had not paid off.

He said: "I remember the game. I was injured at the time but I was sitting on the bench, and it didn't go our way. We didn't play as we wanted to."

Torquay then completed their first double over the Pilgrims in 41 years when they beat them 2-1 at Home Park at the start of January.

Argyle, Torquay and Exeter City are all in the same division for the first time since the 2001/02 season.

But Cole insisted the Pilgrims were only focused on their aims and objectives, and not of their two Devon rivals.

He said: "As long as we do what we have to do, and we are where we want to be, it shouldn't really bother us too much where the other local teams are."

The short trip to Plainmoor today will be followed by back-to-back home games against Port Vale next Saturday and Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, September 18.

Cole said: "Hopefully, we can get a little run going after our good result last Saturday."

The trip to Plainmoor is much shorter than the Argyle players are used to for away games – and it is the same for the Green Army.

The Pilgrims have sold all their allocation of 1,500 tickets for the first Devon derby of the season.

Cole said: "To be fair, the fans do a lot of travelling, especially with the Tuesday night games, and they always turn out in really good numbers, so credit to them.

"They are brilliant. Our fans are the best in the league, without a shadow of doubt."

“They'll be the best fans in the blue square next season as well according to you Jake.

Can't wait to hear how the game plan didn't work when the gulls smash 5 past you.”
