“@soultoucher I'm glad you are not doing this for a reaction, and very glad you would like to help. I think you under estimate what is going on in the city already one of the groups I am involved with has gone from 6 people in a pub 18 months ago to 140 booked at our next event, I'm not frustrated with our efforts I just wish more people would get involved and make other stuff happen also. So like I say I am glad you said you would help, turn up to any of the groups mentioned below and ask around, they will be glad to make the most of your services. And obviously that goes for anyone else who happens to read this.”

    “@benin
No, please don't think I was baiting you, although I will say you do sound negative. Maybe change that word to defeatist now that I realise you've been trying unsuccessfully to gain ground.
Your comment about more people getting stuck in sounds as if it's your stumbling block.
People won't make an effort if they're less than 100% enthusiastic, and the longer you and (not enough) like minded people keep trying and not gaining ground, the more frustrated you'll become.
Why not get the group together who are seriously interested and take a trip to an arena venue or large event happening outside the city? Make a weekend of it maybe.
Not for the first time have I thought it a pity that the option to PM on this site isn't avaliable, too much personal info on a public forum isn't a good idea, but I certainly would have helped.
All the best getting it all together.”

“@soultoucher I think you are just trying to provoke a reaction. But in case you're genuine people like myself are putting huge quantities of time and a little money into projects like this in Plymouth, and have a good understanding of what is required to organise events as we have been doing it for some time, the problem is there are just not enough of us to get it all done, what would make a huge difference in more people getting stuck in.”

    “@benin
Ah, I see the problems you have, you're a negative thinker, and I sympathise with you a little but obviously not to the extent of funding a group of people who don't seem to be motivated enough to organise a few hours one evening a week to discuss something important to them.
All I get from your post is a list of excuses, negativity and an unwillingness to realise that organising this is a simple thing. You're over-complicating it, and you say it's a group for science, ethics and reason.
I'm curious as to where the £160 came from but am afraid to ask. And an unknown number of people? You have to know how many people would attend, then you get a few squid from each of them to cover the costs of rental/speaker currant buns etc.
You can do it mate, you don't need me. Do it all online, 1 hour at a time.
It won't evolve all by itself like the human race you know.”

“@soultoucher if a group was able to find a room large enough with the right facilities for £20 an evening. That would be £160 plus the price of the food for an unknown number of people, if your volunteering the cash please let me know. Then there is of course finding the right people, if you were to do this kind of thing justice you need people who really know what they are talking about, not just talk about there personal feelings or experience on the subject. The time element is a big issue if you have a full time job and other responsibilities outside of work also. Time is a precious commodity in short supply. Perhaps someone like yourself with a clear vision to do it quickly, cheaply and simply should do it?”

    “@benin
It appears from your post that you have everything you need, I don't understand what you're 'working on'.
How much funding do you need to rent a hall (there are plenty available all over Plymouth from £20 per evening weeknights) and find a speaker amongst you to give a talk, you could have a different speaker each week over 8 weeks.
It would only take a little thinking about to work out the logistics of providing a meal should you want one. After all, you're all logical thinkers...it'll be a doddle.
I don't see why it would 'take some time'? Am I missing something?”

“@soultoucher we're working on it, unfortunately we don't have access to the same kind of funding as religious groups. So it will be some time. There are groups in the city that have stuff along the same lines: Plymouth Astro, SciBar, Plymouth Humanists and Skeptics in the pub. Just takes time to build things up.”
