Cracks have appeared along the coast path at Jennycliff in Plymouth and a geotechnical inspection commissioned by the City Council has recommended a short section be closed to the public as a precautionary measure.

There have been a number of landslips in the region following last month’s torrential downpours and similar closures are in place between Wembury Point and Wembury Beach and between Thurlestone and Hope Cove, where there was a cliff collapse.

Metal meshing was installed in the bank above the coast path at Jennycliff last year after a large landslide, but it is the bank below that is now causing concern. Movement in the bank will be closely monitored to establish whether any further work is needed.

As soon as experts can be sure the path is stable and members of the public are safe the path will be re-opened. In the meantime, signs have been put up diverting walkers along Staddon Road.

Anyone walking the South West Coast Path is advised to take extra care and:

* stay away from cliff edges

* look out for signs of collapse, such as cracks appearing in the path or ‘slumping’- if there are any, do not use the path!

* obey any warning signs or path closures – they are there for your protection

* wear boots with good grip and stay on surfaced paths at all times.
