A MAN was airlifted to hospital with "life-threatening" injuries after a three-car crash, say police.

The injured man suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs following the smash near Bideford, in North Devon.

He was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter.

Police say a black Land Rover Discovery, a red MGF sports car and a foreign-registered Citroen C4 were involved in the collision, which happened on the A39 at Fairy Cross shortly before midday on Saturday.

A force spokesman said: "Early reports lead us to believe that a man has suffered life threatening injuries."

A second man was treated at the scene by paramedics as three fire crews also attended.

RARE and antique books will go on show when a unique city library stages a Heritage Day this weekend.

The Plymouth Proprietary Library, which was established in 1810, boats a collection of 20,000 books and historic manuscripts.

A recent Heritage Lottery Fund grant has enabled staff to carry out vital preservation work, while Plymouth University students are currently helping to catalogue the stockpile.

The doors of the North Hill library will be open from 10am until 2pm on Saturday.

A CONCERT version of the comic opera hit HMS Pinafore will raise money for a seafaring charity next month.

The Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship are putting on the show at St Andrews Church on October 6.

The "semi-staged" production will feature principal singers in costume on the night, which begins at 7.30pm.
