SOMERSET'S Devonian all-rounder Lewis Gregory is back bowling again in the nets after a stress response injury in his lower back.

Plympton-born Gregory, a product of the Somerset Academy, announced his arrival on the scene by taking four for 49 in a 50-over game against Pakistan in September 2010, on his debut for the County.

In his first full season, he carried on with his success with the ball and gained a reputation bowling 'at the death' in one-day cricket.

Before he suffered his injury, the 19-year-old claimed 13 wickets in seven games in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at a cost of 14.92, twice claiming a four-wicket haul, to top Somerset's averages.

In the Twenty20 Cup, he appeared in 12 matches, ending up as Somerset's leading wicket-taker in the competition with 18 scalps at an average of 17.00.

Gregory said: "The back is feeling much better and I've been in and started some low-level bowling in the indoor nets.

"I've got an appointment with a specialist in a couple of weeks. Then we can hopefully crack on and up the tempo a bit, so it's feeling good at the moment.

"It was really disappointing for me to get a back injury and a bad time for me because things had started well, especially in the one-day format, so it was demoralising to get the injury then.

"But that's sport and something that's only going to make me stronger and hopefully a better player in the future."

Gregory added: "I started off the season really well and broke into the first team.

"One-day cricket went exceptionally well, but the four-day wasn't quite so good and that's something I'm looking to try and make an impact on.

"I still see myself as a batting all-rounder, so that's one of the main things I'm focusing on at the moment.

"My main aim looking to 2012 is to get into the team and make more of a contribution with the bat and the ball, and nail a space down for the whole of next season.

"Hopefully, in 2012 I'll get to play in the first team in all formats of the game and I'll improve on what I have already achieved."

Reflecting on his first season at Somerset, Gregory said: "My first wicket in the championship was a huge achievement and something I'm very proud of.

"That was when I got Moeen Ali out when we played against Worcestershire here in Taunton. There were also a couple of bowling performances against Gloucestershire in the T20 and in the CB40.

"They were stand-out performances for me, but it's a team game and it's all about winning and that's what we're here to do.

"In 2012, I want to be part of a Somerset side that lifts some silverware."

Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose said: "What Lewis has naturally is an inherent ability to bowl in crisis situations, seeing his performances in one-day cricket particularly.

"He can stand up to pressure and is one of the few bowlers in the country who can bowl above 85 to 88 miles an hour and, if he can get that right and start swinging the ball, he's going to be a mighty fine cricketer."

Rose added. "He has the potential to bat anywhere between four and six and bowl as well."
