Crossing will be built near school to help protect pupils before Christmas
A SECONDARY school in Plymstock is to get a zebra crossing built on a busy road outside its gates by Christmas.
Plymouth City Council confirmed yesterday that it would build a crossing and improve footpaths and signs on Church Road outside Plymstock School.

'GOOD NEWS': Head David Farmer
Last week headteacher David Farmer demanded action from the council after a string of minor accidents and near-misses before the school broke up for the summer holidays.
He said yesterday he was delighted with how quickly the council had acted, and was looking forward to the improved safety measures being installed before Christmas.
Mr Farmer said: "I think it's really good news, because hopefully the crossing will be in before the colder and darker weather arrives.
"I think it will be a big improvement to the road. We will also work with students to improve their road safety."
Worried parents said last week that a deadly car crash was 'waiting to happen' outside the school, which Mr Farmer said had been fighting for years to drive down the speed limit. Yesterday he expressed his thanks to teacher Tracy Wilkins and South West Devon MP Gary Streeter for their involvement in the call for a zebra crossing at the school..
Up to 1,700 youngsters arrive at and leave the school every day and a large proportion travel by car.
Though traffic, including buses, is restricted to 30mph, there are no speed bumps or pedestrian crossings nearby. Some stretches of road do not even have pavements.
A council spokesman said it had been working with Plymstock School since 2007 to encourage sustainable travel choices and improve safety on the school journey. The School Travel Plan process showed that to encourage walking to school a safer crossing place and extension of the footway needed to be implemented.
"Since April the council has been committed to looking into these new road safety measures for Plymstock School and allocation has been made in the new budget for improvements.
"The council is delighted to have the opportunity to provide better facilities for school children, parents and residents. Consultation on the plans starts this week and letters will be going out to residents in Church Road shortly."

“This is a national problem and the cause is the parents who have no idea about sensible parking. Children, being children, will run out between parked cars and those cars belong to the parents who are endangering the lives of their own children if they only thought, unlikely, about it.”

“I gather from the publication that, consultation of the proposed plan has just started. I believe this normally takes 3 weeks and residents will be expected to send their comments.
It is wrong for some of you to assume this is a done deal.
It is a loudable idea to provide a pedestrian facility in such an area. Let us not kill the idea but rather respond to the consultation letters with suggestions.”

“You can sit on that road for an hour in the morning and not see a single vehicle.
I bet over half the cars down there are school traffic, as the rest of the time it is deserted.
It is the same whingers complaining about the speeding traffic that are the problem.”

“The reason accidents will occur on this road is due to parents dropping their kids off in the middle of the road, or pulling up onto the pavement then pulling out without thought - the very people complaining.
The proposed site for this crossing will make the situation worse, it is far too close to a blind bend, children will be more inclined to walk out onto the crossing without looking, and cars will come around the bed with not enough time to stop safely, there have been instances of Zebra crossings making road safety worse and I believe this is one of them, a far better solution is to slow the traffic before getting near the school entrance, by speed humps further up the road.
Plymstock school should also allow parents to drive in the entrance, drop children off and leave by the appropriate exit, a solution they seem not to want to consider, but if child safety is their concern then this should be their proposal.
The fact is Plymstock School is far outgrowing the local infrastructure and there should be more far reaching plans to move the entrance/exit to a less heavy residential street.
Resident support - no - and we will be opposing, not least because we only received our letters yesterday, and low and behold here it is launched to fanfare by the School or council, You would be far better off involving the residents in your discussions in the first instance - or is this a done deal and residents letters are just a formality to be ignored?
The real issue here is child safety, and this crossing will make the situation worse, there's also no mention here of the need to narrow the road - on the blind bend - to add a footpath, funneling the traffic coming around the blind bend into and even narrower gap, on top of that there is a side road, Lands Park exiting right onto the planned site for the crossing, an absolute recipe for disaster.
I sincerely hope the plans are revised, and the residents will be trying our damnedest to get them revised.”

“The only reason accidents will happen on this stretch of road is due to the irresponsible parents who drive their kids to school, drop them in the middle of the road or park on the pavement and pull away without thought, the very parents complaining. Plymstock School have not helped themselves or the children by refusing to let parents drive in through the entrance, drop off children and leave through the appropriate exit.
As a resident who was informed of the plan yesterday (thanks Council/Plymstock School for giving us ample notification before publishing your fanfare plans to the wider public) I can tell you the proposed site for the crossing will make the situation worse, it is far too close to a blind bend, kids will expect to walk out without thought and cars will not see the crossing until they are right on it. There's no mention here they also need to narrow the road, on the blind bend, to fit in the new foot path, making the situation even worse.
Support from residents - no - and we will be opposing the plans.
A far more effective solution would be to put speed humps to slow the traffic either side of the school entrance.
The fact is Plymstock School is outgrowing the local road infrastructure, there should be a far more reaching plan to move the entrance/exit away from a heavy residential street.”
