Daley set for challenge at Youth Games
TOM DALEY has added another first to his distinguished CV after Plymouth's diving world champion was named in Team GB's squad for next month's inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
Daley will be one of 40 young British athletes involved in the exciting and hugely-influential tournament which will run from August 14-26 and will involve all 26 sports on the Olympic summer programme.
The 16-year-old city schoolboy is naturally excited about the prospect of competing and mixing with athletes from his own age group (14-18yrs), even though the Youth Olympics will add to an already hectic schedule for him.
Also in August are the European Championships in Budapest, which precede the Youth Olympics which, in turn, are ahead of the Junior World Championships in Arizona.
So, it's a busy period for Daley, who is also expected to head the England team's bid at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi this October.
But, as always, Plymouth's most famous son, who is returning to action after a back injury, is simply looking forward to competing again and excited about the Youth Olympic challenge.
Daley, who represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, told Herald Sport: "I just can't wait to go to Singapore and say that I was one of the first athletes to compete at the Youth Olympics.
"There'll be a lot of different sports and consequently athletes taking part.
"I think it's a great idea as it will help show athletes around my age of what is ahead of them at major tournaments.
"It'll mean me having to live out of a suitcase for a while, as I've got to get from Budapest to Arizona with only a two-day window in between, before then heading off to Singapore.
"It's going to be busy for me but definitely worthwhile."
