Dartmoor residents caught speeding
LOCALS have been warned by police after several were caught speeding on the moors.
Speed checking in the area has been stepped up after The Herald reported how more than a dozen of farmer David Skelley's animals had been killed by cars in the Wotter area.
Several drivers were caught out yesterday by police, some of whom were travelling at almost "double the speed limit".
But surprisingly, the police revealed that the majority of those speeding were residents immediately local to the moors.
Acting Sergeant Ryan Canning, of Plympton police, said: "We issued several warnings to people who were speeding. One gentleman was travelling 57mph in a 30mph zone, which is almost double the speed limit.
"The point on Monday was everyone we caught was local. They all lived within a couple of miles of the area at Shaugh or Bickleigh, so it's not necessarily people coming from Plymouth City Centre onto the moors – it's people who no doubt drive that road day-in day-out.
"There is certainly a problem of people driving too fast up there and sadly it's people who are almost neighbours."
Acting Sgt Canning said the police would be maintaining a presence in the area in a bid to slow drivers down.

“lve in a 30mph zone and if someone drove at 57mph past my house, I would want to drag them from the car and clout them around the ear. Just because it's the moors, it makes no diffrence. The speeders deserve all the fines they get; well done to the Police. The drivers must be as thick as a hedge because the Police have told us they are up there catching speeders.. doh!”

“I was once told that over 50 in a 30 limit was an automatic ban. I hope that is the case and those idiots caught doing 60 do get a ban. They demonstrate complete disregard for antbody but themselves and should not be in charge of a pram let alone a car.”

“Speeding is becoming a very serious problem and needs to be addressed. Ivybridge has a speeding problem especially on Exeter Road. Especially traffic travelling into town from Bittaford. At the junction with Brook Road I estimate some cars are travelling well in excess of the 30 limit. I've complained but because no one has been killed or seriously injured yet it's therefore not a problem.”

“No surprise there then. And they tried to blame us townies. Look to your neighbours next time and check who is having work done on their cars.”

“It is no surprise at all - whenever these campaigns are implemented it is the locals who are most familiar with the roads who drive fastest.
Besides, at ths time of year 90% of the people on the roads will be local.”
