THERE can't be many vocalists with the nerve and ability to pull off a tribute show to Ella Fitzgerald, the diva widely regarded as the greatest female singer of all time, writes Clare Robinson.

But not only has Joanna Eden, pictured right, done it, she has done it on swanky cruise ships around the world, generating standing ovations time and again from US customers of Ella's vintage and on one occasion even from the curator of the Ella Fitzgerald museum in Washington.

For several years she made a good living playing classy jazz and easy pop on cruise liners and posh hotels around the world, until her debut album, A Little Bird Told Me, featuring jazz takes on well-known tunes, launched at Ronnie Scott's, started attracting proper attention.

After taking time out to have her daughter, it was her second offering, My Open Eye, featuring all her own material that really pulled in serious reviews. Parky is now a fan, Mojo hailed it 'beauty and broken glass all at once', with Time Out labelling her 'the UK's answer to Diana Krall and Nora Jones'.

Having performed to audiences in excess of 12,000 and shared stages with Jamie Cullum and The Buena Vista Social Club as well as gracing some of the highest-profile stages in Berlin, Moscow, Paris and London, Joanna brings her mix of popular Latin, jazz and soul songs to Ashburton's St Lawrence Chapel on Sunday February 12 at 8pm.

A class act indeed, not to be missed.
