Dawe's side bid to end Pirates' unbeaten start

PLYMOUTH Albion will target only their second Championship win of the season when they play host to the Cornish Pirates at Brickfields tomorrow (3pm).

Graham Dawe's side began the 2009-10 campaign on a high with a 33-10 home win over Birmingham-Solihull.

But they have since been brought back down to earth after suffering three successive defeats against Rotherham, Bedford and, last time out, a 30-24 loss at Exeter.

Tomorrow they face a Pirates side who have won each of their first four matches and sit second in the standings.

However, after producing arguably their best performance of the season so far in last Saturday's Devon derby, chairman of rugby Graham Dawe is hoping Albion can build on their display.

"Our level of commitment and physicality last week against Exeter was a big step-up from the week before," said Dawe.

"We played with a reasonable tempo – I just hope we can continue that this weekend.

"But, it takes two to tango, and you need the opposition and the referee singing from the same hymn sheet.

"So, it is not always possible even if that is what you want."

Dawe added: "We were quite disciplined last week at Exeter and that is credit to the players in a derby match.

"But we will need to be the same this weekend against a Pirates side who have got some good and very interesting playmakers.

"They are certainly a very handy team and one which is well supported."

Last time out in front of their own supporters, a disappointing Albion were swamped 38-3 by Bedford.

The Brickfields outfit trailed 17-0 at half-time and despite enjoying a good spell midway through the second half, they were unable to make any real impression.

Dawe felt his side played some good rugby in patches, but he admits they have to develop a more clinical edge to their game.

"We actually played some nice rugby in the middle part of the game," said Dawe on the Bedford match.

"I thought it was a good performance in places without scoring a try – Bedford still haven't conceded a try this season.

"We just have to score a few tries and kick our penalties.

"The Pirates are coming up and that is certainly not a fixture that you can target a win from, if there are any in this division at home."

Albion have made just the one change to their starting line-up for tomorrow's clash with injured winger Geoff Griffiths replaced by Ben Mercer.

That means that scrum-half Ruairi Cushion and flanker Darren Clayton, who both made their first starts at Exeter last weekend, retain their places.

On the bench, Albion will choose from 10 players with injured duo, prop Martin Rice and fly-half Alex Davies, in contention.

"Both players are 50/50 for tomorrow's match," said Dawe.

"Neither is doing any heavy contact work, but Martin is getting treatment every day and we just have to see how it goes."

Albion: Gary Kingdom, Ben Mercer, Keni Fisilau, Sione Tu'ipulotu, Liam Gibson, Kieran Hallett (capt), Ruairi Cushion, Danny Porte, Joe Clark, Ryan Hopkins, Tom Skelding, Tyler Hotson, Sean-Michael Stephen, Darren Clayton, Kyle Marriott. Reps (from): Mark Lee, Jaime Nava, Alex Davies, David Morton, Martin Rice, James Owen, Mike Lewis, Rory Watts-Jones, Wayne Sprangle, James Waterhouse.

“Can we also stop criticising players. Darren, Wayne and Rory all bring something different. It is a long season and they will all be used. But it does not help the team to publicly critise players. Everyone has their opinions but lets just get behind Graham and the coaches and cheer on this young team.”

“well said frank your spot on, clayton was immense last week. rory has a lot to learn from him and needs to put some muscle on, sprangle is never going to be great at this level, he is an impact player for the last 20 when tiredness kicks in.
griffiths is a huge blow, the same old story at albion is happening and were only 4 games in, INJURIES.”

“redup, do you know anything the back row were excellent last week, when wayne started against bedford his contribution was nothing and was completely outplayed, clayton took on exeters pack and was fundamental in producing the good ball we have been looking for”
