TODAY is the last chance to support a mass letter-writing campaign to save Plymouth Airport.

One month ago The Herald joined council leader Tudor Evans in urging people to call on the Prime Minister to protect the airport from housing development.

By yesterday 270 letters and 65 emails had landed on Mr Evans' desk.

The deadline for contributions is 5pm today.

He said: "We'd like to thank everyone for the effort they've put into stating the case for the airport and hope that the Government will intervene and support the city's and region's air services.

"We feel it was important to make the Government aware of the concerns Plymouth residents have and listen to why we think it is important for the city to have an airport."

Cllr Evans launched the campaign at a council debate last month.

The debate was triggered by a save-the-airport petition organised by campaigners from the group Viable, who gathered almost 38,000 signatures.

Cllr Evans called for residents to write to David Cameron urging him to intervene to protect the airport at Roborough.

Sutton Harbour Holdings, which owns a 150-year lease on the land at Roborough, closed the airport last December, saying it was no longer viable. The company later revealed its masterplan to build houses, shops and offices on the 113-acre site.

The petition of more than 37,000 signatures, organised by Viable, was presented to the city council last month. It called for State intervention to save the airport.

At a meeting of the full city council Cllr Evans vowed to protect the airport from development for at least the next nine years. He added that if people expressed the wish as part of the emerging Plymouth Plan, then protection would be extended to at least 2031.

Herald readers can write their own letters to the Prime Minister, and Mr Evans has agreed to collect the letters and forward them to Mr Cameron.
