DEVONPORT water polo club's winning run came to an end with the seniors, under-17s and under-15s all going down to defeat at the Life Centre.

The senior side were the first to flounder, finding themselves 8-0 down to visiting Newton Abbot before ending the half 9-2 behind.

Devonport, to their credit, cut the deficit in the second-half scoring goals in swift succession to trim Abbot's advantage to 9-6.

But that was as good as it got for Devonport in a 14-9 defeat.

It was a similar story for the younger squads with opponents Barnstaple consistently increasing their goal difference to beat the hosts' under-17s 16-6, with the Devonport's under-15s losing 13-6 to a strong, all-male Exeter side.

Devonport coach Bex Carling was full of praise and encouragement for the under-15s, but made no excuses for the defeat.

He said: "The team played with lots of enthusiasm. They're a developing team and have a lot of potential, but Exeter were the stronger, more experienced side and deserved the win."

Meanwhile, Devonport Water Polo's youngest members took part in the regional 'minis' tournament at Paignton.

The under-12s, represented by three teams – Destroyers, Devils and Dolphins – were in competition with nine other teams including Okehampton, Exeter, Barnstaple, Penzance and the host club.

The city side had entered the competition as defending champions having claimed top spot in the last regional event.

Devonport's A team – Destroyers – featuring the club's eldest players in the minis' category, put up a good fight but could not hold onto their title and finished outside the top three.

Despite the setback, Devonport youngsters relished the opportunity of taking part in a tournament, rather than spectating as their older club-mates competed in league matches.

Megan Kelley, 10, said: "I think the tournament was brilliant. It was really fun."

Mini water polo training sessions take place at Plymouth Life Centre on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Kids can take part in two taster sessions to see if they would like to join the club.
