DEVONPORT Water Polo's youngest members enjoyed their moment when they came second in the ASA South West 12 and Under Regional Championships in Tiverton.

The mixed team missed out on the top spot to winners Paignton with a 9-6 loss, but an 11-6 win against third placed Cheltenham secured runners-up place.

Devonport's Jon Lord took the tournament's top scorer accolade with 12 goals.

For youngsters Tia Wolaneic, James Potham and Anna Trickett, the championships marked their first competitive outing.

Devonport Ladies looked to be on form at home at Plymouth Life Centre to Welsh Wanderers in the Bristol & West League, but went down 19-10.

Wanderers took an early 6-2 lead after the first quarter before Devonport GB hopeful Rachel Ward scored twice in the second quarter alongside goals from mum Denise Ward and Laura Davis to end the half only 8-6 down.

The third period was traded 4-4 before Wanderers scored seven uninterrupted goals to win 19-10.

Devonport Ladies' Laura Davis said: "The girls played well against a tough and organised Welsh team.

"We didn't go into it expecting to win but everyone put in a strong performance. There are positives to take from the game."

Coach Roger Bossom said: "Wanderers are top of the league so we knew it would be a difficult match. The team performed well but weren't quite strong enough to cope. Welsh were physically too strong."

Devonport's under-15 mixed side suffered a 19-5 loss away to Exeter in the Devon Knockout Cup.
