A PLYMOUTH schoolboy's dream of playing for Italian football giants Inter Milan ended in front of the TV cameras last night.

Dominic Matcham left reality show Football's Next Star when a Milan coach told the 17-year-old he wouldn't make the grade at the world-famous club.

The gifted midfielder, right, beat thousands of skilled youngsters in the UK and Ireland to reach the final 10 in the Sky1 show, which is offering a contract with Jose Mourinho's Italian champions.

But the Plymouth College pupil was eliminated after a week of training and trials in the northern Italian city.

Dom was devastated by the news that he wouldn't be taken on by the 17-times Italian champions, who boast some of the greatest stars in world football, including Portugal midfielder Luis Figo and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o. But he soon picked himself up.

Dom said: "I was really disappointed immediately afterwards. I felt I had let myself down.

"But then the reality hit that I had beaten about 7,000 other people to get to the final."

Dom was on Plymouth Argyle's books until he was 16, but was not offered a professional contract.

Since then the teenager from Harrowbarrow, near Callington, has trained with Argyle's Championship rivals Bristol City and Crystal Palace.

Former Argyle boss Neil Warnock, now at the helm at Palace, told Dom he was good enough to make the grade after trials at the South London club before Christmas. Dom will learn more about his future when he meets Warnock later this month.

In the meantime, the teenager is turning out for Tavistock in the South West Peninsula Premier League and studying for A Levels.

He said: "I will give everything to football until I'm 18 or 19. If I don't make it, I'd like to work in television."

A career on screen is a realistic fallback for Dom. Sky bosses were so impressed with the Cornish lad's camera manner that they have offered him a work experience stint.
