Driving youngsters into training
YOUNGSTERS with drive are to be given the chance to renovate a 50-year-old Land Rover as a way of leading them to a motor mechanic apprenticeship or training scheme.
The not-for-profit organisation Hook It and Cook It's aim is for teenagers to work alongside skilled volunteers on getting the vehicle ready for off-roading.
It has partnered with young people's information service The Zone Plymouth to support the Lopwell Barn project.
The vehicle will be used to drive to the Zone's Lopwell Barn, a camping venue on the River Tavy at Yelverton, which is difficult to access during winter.

The plan is also for the Land Rover project to be used to take young people on Hook It and Cook It's off-road "safaris", which involve sourcing food from the wild, by "fishing and foraging", and cooking it.
Hook It and Cook It has already worked successfully with school children, helping them catching fish which they cooked and served.
Hook It and Cook It's Nathan Potts, who acquired the Land Rover for £1,000, said the initial task is to replace its engine with a more eco-friendly diesel alternative.
"This is a taster," he said. "It's an opportunity for young people interested in motor mechanics to put their heads under a bonnet.
"We hope to then send them towards a motor mechanics apprenticeship or training.
"We are looking to engage with people from all backgrounds and academic abilities by providing a place where people can share their interests and enthusiasm.
"If the youngsters can harness a bit of self belief they can go anywhere," he said.
Mr Potts is now trying to source partnerships and sponsorship for the project, possibly even leading to gaining some funding from the Government.
"We need things such as materials, parts, labour and work placements for young people," Mr Potts said.
"We plan to work with people who can commit to the project in return for training opportunities and off-road adventures Hook It and Cook It style.
"One of the items we are hoping to secure is a roof tent so we can take young people on coastal safaris where we will teach them how to live off the land in he wild."
Already Mr Potts has secured help from volunteers Charlie Shaw, at the Zone, and Thom Hunt, from Channel 4's Three Hungry Boys TV show.
Hook It and Cook It is responsible for bookings and co-ordinating activities at Lopwell Barn.
The "safari trips" will be open to corporate and public customers with profits ploughed into helping young people.
