A CHRONIC heroin addict who burgled a home is to be treated for his habit.

Mark Purdy, who first took the drug aged 14, broke into a house after taking Valium, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

But he avoided an immediate prison sentence despite previous jail terms.

Purdy, aged 24, of Estuary Way, Barne Barton, admitted burglary of a home in Wolseley Road, St Budeaux, on September 27. He stole electrical goods, handbag and keys valued at just under £1,300.

Recorder Jonathan Fuller gave him a 12-month community order under probation supervision with a six-month Drug Rehabilitation Requirement.

He will be treated and tested for his drug use and undergo regular reviews at court. Nick Lewin, for Purdy, told a previous hearing how he had been in and out of prison, but not received drug treatment for some time.
