Duke of Edinburgh awarded doctorate at University of Plymouth
The Duke of Edinburgh donned a gown and mortar board when he was awarded an honorary doctorate of marine science in Plymouth today.
Philip, a distinguished former member of the Royal Navy, officially opened Plymouth University's £19 million new state-of-the-art marine building, featuring ship simulator and wave tank testing facilities.
The 91-year-old was given a full tour of the building, taking a keen interest in the facility and its potential future use.
His visit to the campus, in Devon, coincided with his award of an honorary doctorate by the university, becoming what is believed to be the oldest royal in British history to be bestowed with such an honour.
