MANAGER Carl Fletcher has defended the disciplinary record of Plymouth Argyle right-back Durrell Berry.

The right-back has already been booked four times this season, even though he has made only six starts and one substitute appearance.

That leaves the 21-year-old one more yellow card away from an automatic one-match suspension.

Fletcher (top) told Herald Sport: "It is what it is. I'm pretty sure none of his bookings have been for dissent.

"I can't start saying to any of my players you can't tackle. They make the decisions out on the pitch whether to go in and challenge or not.

"One game it might save us a goal or get us a goal or put us on the counter attack, and another week it might end up in a booking.

"As long as it's not for dissent, or anything like that, then you can't do anything about it."

Fletcher continued: "Some players play better knowing they have already got a booking earlier in the game.

"It seems to maybe put a bit more focus into them."

Argyle take on Paul Sturrock's Southend United at Home Park today (3pm) and will hope to build on their 3-2 win away to Morecambe last Saturday.

The Pilgrims have not had back-to-back victories for 16 months, since they beat Dagenham and Redbridge and MK Dons over the Easter weekend of April 2011.

Meanwhile, Argyle have had only two clean sheets in eight League Two games this season, and have conceded 12 goals.

The Pilgrims had a much better defensive record at the end of last term as they successfully escaped relegation.

Fletcher believes his side's more attacking style of play at the start of the 2012/13 campaign is the reason for that.

He said: "We have had a few little errors here and there but generally we have not been too bad defensively.

"If you are going to have possession of the ball and you want people to get in positions to be able to receive the ball and everyone has options, you can't just stay rigid and where you need to be defensively.

"It's trying to find the balance so that when you have got the ball you have got all the options you want to be able to keep the ball with relative ease, and when you lose it you can get back in where you need to be defensively."

Fletcher has praised on-loan Aldershot Town striker Guy Madjo for the way he has fitted in at Argyle.

Madjo has played four times for the Pilgrims after making his debut as a substitute in the 0-0 draw at Torquay United on September 8, and has yet to open his goalscoring account.

Fletcher said: "He had not played a lot before he came here so it was good to get a few training sessions in him.

"He comes in, he works hard and he's experienced.

"He has played in this division before so he has fitted right in.

"The lads have taken to him and he has integrated really well."

“Saying we should reach the play-offs and doing it is where you will find out how good this team is, last years team were dire so saying this years team is changed from last year i would hope it would be, then most of the teams in Argyle's will also be changed and added to from last year, not just Argyle, all the points they have dropped at home so far will tell come the end of the season, i see no team they have played at Home Park so far this year that if they are going to get into the play-offs they should not be winning.”

“David Martin (Southend Midfielder) Quote. This is the sort of game we should be winning. How do you work that out? Argyle have a strong squad and I for one feel we are a changed team this year. I think with the players we have on board we should reach the play-offs this year.”

“Just try to keep a clear head Durrell but play your natrual game, ready for another trip to Home Park from Gloucester, let's hope another three points.”
