Endacott eyes indoor boost ahead of London bid
KATHERINE ENDACOTT is counting off the days until she can put her long hours of practice to the test at the Birmingham Indoor Games early next month.
The international sprinter and Team GB bobsleigh brakeswoman (pictured left) decided against more indoor athletics grands prix in favour of track time spent up at Brickfields with her sprints coach and dad Steve Endacott.
City of Plymouth AC and Sale Harrier Endacott had made a solid start to her indoor campaign before Christmas and planned to compete more in January.
Her victories and times at the Cardiff GPs had given the 2010 Commonwealth Games double-medalist high hopes of going into the new year with an added spring in her step with the summer Olympic Games in London firmly in mind.
But after aggravating a previously injured wrist while weight-training, it was decided to put competing on the back burner for a couple of weeks and concentrate on leg work on the track.
Instead of defending her sprint titles at the South of England Championships in north London this weekend, Endacott's focus will be on training, training and more training.
Endacott said: "It has to be this way, to be fair, with the wrist injury, but in all honesty, I'm really glad now I've gone with it.
"I had to have my wrist pinned last year after an injury and I damaged it again in the weights room, but that hasn't stopped me training.
"This year is extremely important with the Olympics and all my focus, really, is on qualifying for London.
"Of course, if I'm thinking that way then so are others and all eyes will be on the Olympic trials in June when I hope to land an individual 100m place, as well as a 4x100m relay slot.
"In between, training hard and picking out competitions is the strategy me and my dad have devised.
"The Birmingham Games (on February 4-5) is always a well-supported meet and has been a lucky one for me in the past.
"The following weekend it is the UK trials in Sheffield for the World Indoor Championships in March in Turkey.
"Although the outdoor season, sensibly, has to be my priority, if I can get good form by doing well at the indoors, then that's a bonus.
"I really like running indoors and if I was to qualify for the world championships that would be fantastic.
"But, if I do not qualify – the time I have to get for the 60m is 7.3secs which would be a personal best – I'll be well prepared for the outdoors."
