AN EVENT is being staged in Plymouth to inform businesses how they can gain and benefit from taking on an apprentice.

Representatives from Enterprise Plymouth will be in the Wings Diner, at Airport Business Centre, in Thornbury Road, Estover, on Wednesday, February 22, between 10am and 2pm.

Enterprise Plymouth has been working with the owners and managers of small businesses for nearly 30 years.

"Ever thought of taking on an apprentice? Come and learn more about how employing an apprentice could help your business," a spokesman said.

"At no cost to your business, Enterprise Plymouth can assist with the recruitment and selection of someone who can bring new skills into your business.

"Join the 82 per cent of employers who rely on apprentices to provide the skilled workers they need for the future.

"All their training is paid for by the Government's National Apprenticeship Service if they are under 19."

Airport Business Centre, which is part of the Una Group, offers office, industrial and storage space to let in Estover.

“The sooner the emphasis on university education as the be all and end all of getting a good job ends the better. Many employers would prefer apprentices to a piece of paper from a university. The apprentices themselves would gain getting paid and learning at the same time. I could not get a grant for university and ended up doing a Dip Tech course - six months at work and six months at college. On reflection I'm glad I did not go to university.”

“Please don't tar all apprentices with the same brush... my 17 year old son is doing a 4 year apprenticeship in the construction industry. He works 4 days with 1 day at college. As he cannot afford the insurance for a car he walks to work and home again in all weathers. I am proud to see him looking to the future.”

“So right Bregor 39. I can still rememberthe days of 5 year contractual apprenticships with weekly day release from employement in order to obtain technical qualifications, i.e national certificate, higher national and degree diplomas. would fit you out as a tradesman anywhere in the world.”

“A lot of people usesd to knock the Dockyard, but the 5yr apprentiship we done was second to none.Thats when you had a fully trained tradesman come out of it,unlike the short term rubbish taught them nowadays”

“Will these apprenticeships be of value to the participent. So often have we seen these hacked together poorly paid tea trolley type, odd job, work experience short time, no qualification, pretence apprenticeships?”
